Here is an opportunity to own a really cool piece of comic book history.

 

It is likely that Motion Picture Funnies #1 (First Funnies, Inc., 1939), which features the first appearance of the Sub-Mariner, is a book you will never own. There are only nine copies and they are too darn expensive!!!

 

But while issues #2 - #4 (1939) were planned, they were never published. Instead, only covers survive.

 

The cover art for #3 is by Max Neill, whose work was later seen in Centaur comics among others, and the cover art for #2 and 4 is by Martin Filchock who drew the "compare these two pictures" scenes for Highlights magazine in the 1970s.

 

Overstreet 2012 NM- 9.2 value for set (only value listed) = $1,000.
