TRULY A COLLECTOR'S DAY

3 posts in this topic

This morning I met my son and his girlfriend at the Minnesota State Fair for the biggest of the two yearly comic shows in Minnesota. I found one dealer who had FMs, Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella, and other non-Warren monster mags. He didn't have anything that I needed, but it was fun going through his fairly extensive inventory.

I was a bit late at one dealer's table who had a Bronze/Silver age sale going on ($2 for any comic) - two guys cleaned out most of the comics from those boxes. However, I did pick up a dozen 12 cent and 15 cent Supermans, Jimmy Olsens, and Lois Lanes in really nice shape. I also bought five 12 cent Uncle Scrooges and three Archies (one was a 10 cent issue).

BTW, these were all "readers." My son is the comic collector, I just buy reader copies as cheap as I can get and actually read them! :news: I try to get decent condition, but I don't like paying more than a couple of bucks each.

I actually learned to read English as a kid reading the DC family of comics, Uncle Scrooge, Archie, etc. But, this was back in the day when comics were chock full of words. I remember when I was six or seven I could read, use in my vocabulary, and spell words like "hallucinations," "hoax," and other words frequently used in the Superman family of DC comics. I still enjoy reading them when I'm having a snack or need some mental stimulation! :eyeroll:

The punchline was when I got home. My son was big into pro-wrestling from the ages of about 9-14 and he collected WF carded action figures. There were no special protective cases to put these in back in the day, so they have been stored away carefully in boxes for over a decade. After alot of searching, I found an on line dealer that had cases that fit his WF Hasbro carded figures. I ordered a bunch as a surprise and they were waiting for me when I got home after the comic convention. I just got through putting about 3 dozen of them in the cases. See the photos below.

Anyway, it was a good day for a collector! - MIKE

sweet Doink action figure

Thanks! The kid's got some pretty interesting action figures. Unfortunately, they didn't make action figures of my wrestling heroes back in the day, i.e. Buddy "Nature Boy" Rogers, the Graham Brothers, the Fabulous Kangaroos, Cowboy Bob Orton (Randy's GRANDfather), Handsome Johnny Barend, etc.
