Isn't Batman #608 and Superman #204 proof that comics don't need to be....

In one of his many speeches (I think this was at the Eisner awards a few years ago), Frank Miller pointed out that the comics industry stopped making comics for kids about 15 years ago and that the companies should be striving to make good comics for the adults that are sticking around rather than try to figure out why the kids are gone.

 

In truth, I know he's right. Kids don't care about comics, but I hope that he's wrong, and I try to encourage kids to read comics. But it just doesn't stick with kids these days, at least not until they are teens... then they might have a chance of sticking with the material if it captures their attention and imagination. But the under 10 crowd? Gone. Not coming back. They've moved on.
