The Copper 100: The Most Important DC Comics (1984-1991)

46 posts in this topic

Okay, let's try this again, but this time, with DC.

I don't know DC nearly as well in this time period. I didn't start reading DC until late 80s. That means this list is heavy on key issues and probably a little light on great storylines that aren't highly sought after.

Plus, DC also had some long-running minis, so those fill up the list really quick, meaning the rest of the list is lacking the well rounded feel that I'm looking for. I mean, look at all of those Batman books. Weren't there any good Superman, Flash, or Wonder Woman stories?

Keep in mind that the Death of Superman arc comes after the Copper Age cutoff (at least, my Copper Age cutoff).

Now that I've gone through and made these lists, I'm wishing I had just gone 80s, and then created one for the 90s. I know there are reasons for the era start and end dates, but for a list like this, it seems arbitrary.

Crisis can be 1,7,8,12

V and Watchmen probably can be #1 only

Sandman keys are really only 1 and 8

Need Hellblazer 1, maybe 2

Booster Gold 1

Perez' Wonder Woman #1

Legends 6 was first new JLA

Omega Men 3

Green Lantern 141

Hmmm, I thought I had Hellblazer on there. Must've deleted them for some reason.

I can certainly add the others, too, but I hesitate to delete most of the V, Watchmen, or Crisis runs, simply because the storylines were so crucial. But that's a lot of issues taking space from other potentially important books. It's the whole key issue vs. great storyline debate, I guess. My list isn't just the key issues, it's also trying to cover the great arcs.

There's a whole bunch more, but I am being stingy

I feel like I've picked the wrong time to seek help honing my list. Everyone's interested in Copper to make a quick buck, and I'm just looking to own some of the best books the era had to offer. (shrug)

Everyone is feeding you great information. Why would you think otherwise?

The only differences of opinion other than when Copper Age occurred (that is never going to be a complete conversation) is what to include on the list.

No, it's that stingy part of the previous post. I got the impression he was holding out on good information.

But yeah, the dates of the era are certainly always in dispute. I think I mentioned this elsewhere, but I should've just stuck with 80s and 90s. Then again, where's the fun in that?

Certainly some great key issues being mentioned here. Are there any great storylines that aren't necessarily key issues? Seems like the Marvel list had a few arcs that were great stories but not necessarily sought after or valued from a price perspective.

Also, I'm getting well over 100 now, and that will rise once I input the last 5-6 suggestions. Any ideas on what to cut?

I can cut back the limited series to just one issue, as suggested, but that feels like cheating. :boo:

I think he was just messing with us all. The bulk of what is hot has been pouring out in suggestions and your already established list.

Yeah I think the time period in question is already pretty well known. It's the list for '92 to 2000 that should be interesting to see what everyone suggests. That era is more wide open with an unknown future of what's to be hot.

After some deliberation, I've decided to restructure the Copper 100 lists and focus on DC from the 80s and then another list for DC in the 90s. Seems like I'm missing some great books that just miss my 1984 start date, and I want to include some of those.

Of course, I'm sure that I'll have to leave off some from late '79, but I can live with that.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll post my 80s list once I have a draft.
