Great characters of the Copper/Modern Age

and here's two reasons for the dearth of new characters in the last 20 years:

 

Lack of ownership: many creators held back their talents for fear of giving away their ideas for "free" due to work-for-hire laws in effect. And when they did self-publish them, they didnt last long due to the difficulty in operating outside the DC/Marvel reality.

 

Ongoing momentum of existing characters: the Silver Age exploded like the Big Bang out of a near vacuum devoid of heroes. And nearly every character created then still exists today, many with still their own books. So there is less "need" for new characters. Its harder for new characters to gain a foothold against the perrennials muscling them to the sides.

 

But, having said that, Im sure we'll look back and find a few inportant characters from this period
