If it's from 1942, I think this is actually Action Comics 54 and not Superman 54

hm

 

+1 GCD lists a 13 page Superman story called "The Pirate of Pleasure Island" from Action #54.

Yeah, it's a shame he never got around to doing more. Really wonderful reading.
