Norm Breyfogle Detective Comics

one of my favorite artists when I was a kid was Norm Breyfogle. His artistic interpretation of Batman was dark gritty, powerful, and mean. To me, Breyfogle's Batman was the most gothic and menacing.

If you love some Breyfogle please share your favorite cover or story (thumbs u

After a year I finally tracked down all the foreign versions of Detective #604. doh!

Top Row: Germany, Italy, Mexico

While Aparo will always be my favorite childhood Batman artist, Breyfogle's Detective run was amazing.

I didn't appreciate it in full when I was a teenager, but the run has grown on me in the decades since, particularly in comparison to much of what's come since.

And Detective 613 is one of my favorite Batman stories ever!

ahhh now i gotta go back and recheck #613 out...

yeah no doubt Aparo was great. His art semed like a continuation of Neal Adams to me which is a compliment of the highest :)

Breyfogle just seemed very eerie and his capes were the most fun and dramatic at the same time

I'd have a hard time ranking my favorite Batman artists but Breyfogle would be up there. There was so many good ones over the years - going back to the early ones - Sprang, Robinson, Moldoff - no Kane in my book. In the SA, I never liked Infantino's Batman but for sure Adams, Aparo (who was my Batman artist - I loved Brave and Bold). I would add Marshall Rogers to my list along with Kelley Jones. After that I stopped collecting new books.

Always thought he was an excellent artist.

I always looked forward to reading Grant and Breyfogle's work in Detective and Batman each month. Very consistently enjoyable and long run of comics.

No love for Marshall Rogers?

When I started collecting, the Rogers issues were clearly exceptional books. I also like Michael Golden's Batman / Man-Bat stories from around this time.

Good call, Paul. I especially loved the later Batman Family books, the ones with Kaluta and Starlin covers - kind of a little extra treat. Loads of talent in those books. I know Golden wasn't throughout but those books are great.

I know not CA but Golden did some Bats in the CA - at least covers I think.

Aparo was great as well - I have had people ask if some of his early Phantom Stranger issues were done by Adams as they are fairly close.

Although I'm a big Adams fan, I never bothered to check who had actually done the cover for Detective Comics 439.

Always looked more like Aparo to me.

I love Norm Breyfogle's Batman work. :cloud9: The Mud Pack storyline was the first Detective story I read as a youngster. :acclaim:

Since this thread needs more pics, here are some Breyfogle sketches I asked him to do last year.

And I loved his covers to Batman 450 and 451, so I bought this Joker sketch too. :cloud9: I hope to get a Clayface sketch someday! :wishluck:
