IF THIS IS THE COPPER AGE??

No really, in all seriousness. Comics hit their peak in copper.

DC was rejuvinated by and after Crisis.

Marvel was churning out some of the best superhero comics since the silver age.

Alternatives to the big two were plentiful and unique.

Risks were being taken.

New types of storytelling were being explored.

Byrne wasn't burned out.

The King was still King.

The Moore the merrier.

Things were being Chaykin up.

I'm not trying to be Rude, but Steve was "The Dude".

It wasn't all about image.

Valiant efforts were still to come.

We learned that the Mice in Maus were really men.

Year One, Man of Steel.

Sandman didn't put us to sleep.

Heroes could come in a half-shell.

Secret Wars...Crisis... Legends

Sable was still freelance...

...Lord Papal was no man of the people...

Mechanics were cool (and kind of hot)

Aw heck, give me Zeck!

We learned the difference between Church and State.

Bwah! Ha! Ha!

How does this statement indicate comics were hitting their peak? confused-smiley-013.gif

Don't get me wrong, I love some of Marvel's superhero stuff from the 80's, but they have never really recaptured the magic they created in the Silver Age.

It's generally accepted, perhaps not by you Blowout, that comics hit a storytelling plateau (or PEAK) in 1986 with the publication of critical darlings Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen and Maus.

By focusing in on Marvel, my first statement of a few dozen, you excluded all of the other reasons why comics were hitting their peak in the 1980's.

Have we had a better year since? Did we have a better year before?

hence the word SINCE

Sure, I got that part. But you headed your list with the statement 'Comics hit their peak in copper', which I disagree with. They were good, but the Age cannot match Silver.

Possibly, but comic books are not all about storytelling, and if that were all collectors were interested in then I'm sure novels would be the way to go.

For me, the characters, story, artwork all go hand in hand, and while the 80's did have some high points, the age as a whole was not as creative as the Silver Age.

I cannot disagree with my statement. Comics IN GENERAL were better in the 1980's then they were in the 1960's.

That is particularly true for DC (that's in my opinion...).

There aren't really any legitimate comparisons available between the ground-breaking independant comics of the 1980's and the other publishers in the 1960's.

As for Marvel... it varies from title to title...

I am not saying that Spider-Man comics in the 80's were better than Spider-Man comics in the 1960's... but they were pretty good in sections.

I do prefer Byrne's FF over 90% of Lee-Kirby (yes, that's blasphemy, I know).

Ditto for Simonson's Thor over Kirby's Thor.

X-Men was never better than Claremont-Byrne... but Claremont-Smith and Claremont-Romita Jr. were pretty darn good.

Byrne and then Peter David's Hulk comics were much more enjoyable IMO than the entire Hulk run in Tales to Astonish...
