Need advice on First Archie

5 posts in this topic

I have the original Archie comics #1 (winter 1942). It's been in my family for 40 years now but it's not in the best shape. I was advised to get it graded by cgc so I signed up and was about to send it off. Then after looking at the book closer I noticed some of the middle pages are missing. My question is.... Should I still try to get it graded or is it not worth it? Also is the book still worth decent amount of money since I believe it is rare? I am interested in selling it and I'm not an expert on the subject so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Big keys like Archie #1 will fetch decent money even if incomplete. It's worth spending the relatively few bucks to get it graded if you plan on selling it online to an unknown buyer, simply because they will at the very least have an idea of what they're getting.

If you have a buyer in mind, then it may not be worth spending the time and money in grading it if you can agree on price.

I'd still get it graded. Then potential buyers will know exactly what they're getting. If you just list it on eBay without having it graded, bids might be quite low, as no one will have confidence that they know exactly what's missing from the book.

I'm in the minority here, but I wouldn't spend the money to get it slabbed. You should be able to make a reasonable assessment of what's missing using GCD.

It will move well on Ebay regardless of the slabbing. It's a high demand book in any condition.

Here's the link to Archie #1 at GCD:

If you need help with general grading in addition to that, feel free to PM me and I'll give you a hand.
