Some Set Sale Originals + Bettie Page Signed Photos!

1 post in this topic

Howdy!

I need to raise some funds before Christmas to pay overdue property taxes so I’ve gone into my subterranean vault and picked out a small group of originals from my personal collection which I am offering here at set sale prices. None of these have seen the light of day for 20-30 years or longer!

I am also offering a nice set of Bettie Page Autographed Photos!

All are first come, first served.

Postage & Insurance are extra. I can also ship FedEx if you have an account with them.

For payment, I will accept a check or US postal money order. I will also accept PayPal as payment if you pay the fees. Overseas customers can pay via bank transfer or PayPal.

Email me at lawrenceshell @ comcast.net to reserve an original or if you have any questions about any of them. I am in and out during the day but will answer all emails in the order received.

Alternate email if needed – sheltone55@yahoo.com

Don’t assume something is sold if you don’t see this list until after the weekend. A lot of people may not see this until Monday or later.

====================================================

PLEASE NOTE – Some of the artwork was scanned in two sections and stitched together so you may see lines through the art which do not appear on the originals. A couple pieces may also have a slight blurriness in the stitched area. ====================================================

Zack Mosley SMILIN’ JACK – Lot of 5 Daily Strips from 1943

Great lot of five (5) SMILIN’ JACK daily strip originals by Zack Mosley who was at the top of his game, artistically and story-wise at this stage. Zack’s assistant during this period was Boody Rogers and I wouldn’t be surprised if he worked on these strips as they certainly look like he may have!

All the strips are from 1943 and the same storyline. Dates are January 20 & 23, February 2, 6 & 8.

Jack, Flatbush and the lovely “de-icer” Cindy, are being pursued by the Nazi-esque ATLAS and his men. Barricaded in a small building, Jack and the others shoot it out and attempt to get a transmitter working but run out of ammo and the enemy prepares to rush in. Cindy who has one bullet left intends to kill herself but is stopped by Jack who thinks he hears a plane but was mistaken. In the final strip, as a plane idles on the runway, Jack and Atlas engage in a brutal fist fight with the former unaware he is being driven closer and closer to the deadly revolving propeller! A great sequence of strips and it’d take a few pages to do the story in just these five justice. Look at the scans which are all readable and enjoy!

All are signed by the artist. Each strip measures 21-1/2” x 7-1/2” and is in Very Good condition but there is Brown Staining on three of them in all the areas that had zipatone. The other two are very clean. All that should be viewable in the scans.

Zack Mosley (December 12, 1906 - December 21, 1993) was a comic strip artist best *known for the aviation adventures in his long-running “The Adventures of Smilin' Jack” which ran in more than 300 newspapers from 1933 to 1973.

Frederick Burr Opper PUCK Magazine Illustration – GUFF!

Here’s a great F.B. Opper drawing done for an 1896 issue of the humor magazine, PUCK, for which he was a longtime contributor.

The piece really looks like a cover illustration with the title, “GUFF” and features a farmer type character who’s just put up a sign reading “Elegant Sumer Board. Manifisent Table, Boting, Fishing, Bathing, Fine Drives. Two Minnets From Depo.” A great and early example of this legendary cartoonist’s work!

Drawing is dated May 9, 1896 on back as this is when Puck received the artwork.

Signed by the artist. Original measures 12-1/2” x 15-1/2” and is in Good condition but all four corners are missing as can be seen in the scan. There is also a small piece missing just above the bottom right corner. Despite the missing corners, the board is pliable and not at all brittle. It is ever slightly tanned with art, but otherwise very clean.

Bob Powell 1947 SPECIALTY DRAWING with MR. MYSTIC + 2 OTHERS

Wow! Here’s something you do NOT see every day. A specialty drawing by the late great Bob Powell!

Dated 1947, it features ink drawings of three characters, most notably MR. MYSTIC, who Powell drew for the weekly Spirit newspaper sections a few years previous. Not sure who the other two characters are. The one on the left looks like Bat Masterson, who Powell, along with Howard Nostrand, drew in a BM comic strip which ran September 7, 1959 to April 1960 written by Ed Herron. The third character to the right looks like the Scarlet Pimpernel but I haven’t any idea. If you know who those 2 characters are, let me know.

The art is inscribed as follows: “To Ed: I hope these won’t ruin your collection. S.R. Powell, June 24, 1947.” I am assuming the Ed this was given to was longtime comics writer, Ed Herron, who Powell worked with on numerous occasions.

When was the last time you saw a Golden Age vintage Bob Powell specialty piece for sale? I have seen 2 in all my years of collecting and selling, 3 counting this one which has been in my collection for over 20 years!

Drawn in ink on Strathmore-like board, original measures 15 x 13-3/4” and is in Very Good condition for its age with minimal tanning, the page is very light colored. There are a few small marks, looks like blue pencil above the figures, very minor. Otherwise, condition is great! About an inch or so of blank space was cut off at the top by the scanner.

Robert Ripley BELIEVE IT OR NOT Daily Panel Cartoon Original, 1932

Dated November 19, 1932, this is an excellent example of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not daily panel cartoon.

This cartoon is notable as it featured a well-known sideshow performer of the era, Professor Leo Kongee, who was known as the "Human Pin-Cushion", "Painless Wonder" or "Man with no Nerves". He was able to drive nails into his head and hat-pins through his tongue without bleeding or feeling pain. He performed with many sideshows including Ripley’s own which featured many live acts of unusual natures.

Some prior owner of this original matted the art onto a piece of 19-1/2” x 23” white poster board and hand-lettered at the top “BELIEVE IT OR NOT by Ripley” and “1932” at the bottom. The art is taped on back around the edges holding it onto the board. The scan cuts out most of the outer area just showing you the original and lettering. I think I can remove it from the mat without damage if the buyer wants me to.

Signed “Rip”. The actual original measures 11” x 14” and is in excellent condition except for the aforementioned tape on the back. It is extremely clean and an exceptional example of this classic strip!

John Severin SAGEBRUSH Half-Page – Complete Strip from CRACKED #115

Original half-page SAGEBRUSH strip by John Severin which was published in CRACKED Magazine #115 (1974.

SAGEBRUSH was a great western humor strip by Severin which appeared in many issues of CRACKED. Sagebrush and Dreary have a discussion about thinning hair and the latter asks why don’t women get bald and Sagebrush replies maybe it’s because they wear their hair longer! The last panel shows Sagebrush on the ground! Ouch!

Signed “Severin” in the first panel. The logo is a Photostat. Original measures 11” x 9” and is Good condition. Four of the five story panels are drawn on what looks like vellum and well pasted onto the board. The fifth panel is drawn directly on to the board. The four pasted on pieces have turned brown with age and have a few dabs of whiteout on them. The word balloons are all drawn directly on the board.

Timothy Truman THE SPIDER #3 (First Series), Page 1 Splash

Stunning Page 1 Splash to issue #1 of the first THE SPIDER mini-series (Eclipse Comics, 1991) by Timothy Truman (story & pencils) and Alcatena (inks). Loosely based on The Spider pulp novel, ”Corpse Cargo”, Timothy Truman’s first SPIDER mini-series gave the classic 1930s pulp character a unique Truman twist and updated the time period to the 1990s as The Spider battles Captain Kidd and her deadly crew.

This page was reused as the first page for the second and third issues as well with the addition of degrees of blood running down the page.

A spectacular image and the most iconic page from the series! I bought this from the artist many years ago and I hate to let it go but times are tough!

A graduate of the Joe Kubert School, Timothy Truman has proven himself a exceptional talent time and again on projects which include Grimjack, Scout, The Spider, Hawkworld, Jonah Hex and much more in his 20+ year career which is still going strong. A helluva guy and a heck of an artist / writer, Truman is one of the best in the biz!

Page is signed twice by Timothy Truman, once in the bottom left corner on the art in ink as “Truman & Alcatena,” and again, on the bottom right black border in gold marker. Original measures 13-1/2” x 20” and is in Very Good condition.
