USPS Package transit within the US – is this normal?

I have just checked the tracking information for a package which has been sent directly to me in Italy by an eBay seller which is in Wyoming, and I see that after three days the package was in Hollywood, CA.

 

Does this make sense? It seems it traveled the opposite way, or is it expected that packages do not take linear routes to travel overseas?

I have also sent a PM to the seller but I was curious to hear if US citizens knew more about this, as the package should arrive here in a few days, but tracking apparently stops at the Los Angeles location.

It might be the international hub. I used to live in WY and when I'd receive packages, many of them would go through CA first. That even counts domestic shipping.

 

That would be my guess. I'd give it a few more days and see what happens.

Most of the western US mail routes through CA. I know AZ routes through CA so it wouldn't surprise me that WY does too.

A hub is like a main shipping location that all of the mail from other post offices in a region go to before being sent out to final destination. Hopefully Hollywood is one of those locations before it gets sent on an international flight to Italy or something.

Think of a wheel. It has spokes and a hub at the center. The smaller cities are like spokes. They send their packages to a central location,or hub.

I'min Boston and often times when I send Priority packages to Florida, the package heade in the opposite direction (north) to New Hampshire. This is the "hub" for this area.

Packages can go I roundabout ways...sometimes I see things go to NJ, to MA or RI, and then to CT...

I recently had package show delivered in Florida, and it was really delivered to the correct address in CA.
