And the other major find at the Half Price Books today.  Not cheap, but a very nice copy of the 6th state from around 1917.  Only my 4th Reilly & Britton Baum book, and second Oz book specifically.  It also came with the Map of Oz/ Flag of Oz, which I believe dates to around 1920, assuming it's truly vintage.  It seems to be but unlike the books, I'm not confident in my ability to identify the original:

It's actually a "middie" - halfway between the short ones and the tall ones like Singing Widow and Murder With Long Hair.

A Blonde For Murder and Looks That Kill are mid size as well.

My bottom shelf there has the three sizes in a row - Looks That Kill (Mid-size), Final Appearance (Short), Death Goes To A Party (Tall)

Many of these "well read" paperbacks must have a story to tell, having passed through a number of hands. Most of this batch of "Authentic Science Fiction" series paperbacks have various second hand bookshop stamps within.

 

 

The numbered John Spencer/Badger Books contain those weird "Joan the Wad" adverts inside.

When John Spencer decided to publish a range of comics he used many existing novels to precis the plots for the multiple strips within. And borrowed artwork already used on the paperbacks too.

I think there are only three S-Series Westerns; which would make it a tempting subset to finish off early.  But I can't find a copy of the S-Series (or D-Series reprint) of L'Amour's Kilkenny for sale, period.

Had an exhausting day driving up to Gainesville to move our Gator out of her summer dorm and into storage for a couple weeks until she moves into an off-campus apartment for fall semester   Tough watching 'em grow up   Small consolation was finding this nice Heinlein 1st PB in the mail when we got back. Making moves on the Heinlein pb's 

Pyramid G642, 1961. "6 x H" is basically The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag excerpted to paperback. The Robert Engle cover art is pretty unique and the color scheme is awesome.

A great collection, featuring Heinlein stories that are more fantasy than SF, although there's some overlap.

"The Unpleasant Profession of Johnathan Hoag" first appeared in Unknown, under the otherwise unused pseudonym of "John Riverside".  I suspect the unusual name was because Campbell had already said there would be no more stories by either Heinlein or "Anson MacDonald" for the duration of the war, since the author(s) were working on the war effort.

"The Man who Traveled in Elephants" first appeared in Saturn under the title "The Elephant Circuit".  I've got the book but I'm not sure where it is and don't seem to have a scan handy.

"All You Zombies" first appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, it was Heinlein's last short story other than one created for an ad campaign. ("Searchlight").  Another one where I have the book but not sure where it is.

"They" also first appeared in Unknown, a great mess with your head story.

"Our Fair City" is Heinlein's only story for Weird Tales, in an issue that also has one of only two stories John D. MacDonald did for the title:

"And He Built a Crooked House" was in Astounding.  It actually appeared on the earliest versions of Heinlein's "Future History" timeline, but it doesn't really fit there.  I suspect that was Campbell insisting anything that appeared under the Heinlein name, rather than Anson MacDonald, show up on the list.

my first Boardman PB (UK) and very well produced with no staples. has been to Brisbane... goes with the subset I started after getting 'D' & 'H' for my Atlas digest collection. I looked around for others & liked what I saw.

T V Boardman books and paperbacks often had covers by the skilled artist Denis McLoughlin. Sadly he committed suicide using the Colt 45 he had used for reference on his Buffalo Bill Annuals. You can read more here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_McLoughlin

I'm sure I've said this before but the T V Boardman Annuals distributed exclusively by Woolworths in the UK in the 1950s are forgotten gems featuring Golden Age Quality strips mixed amongst the text stories.

 

 

 

The Annuals originally came with slip covers. This is the only one I own.

Those are cool as hell. I don't really collect comics anymore but my older  brothers had lots of Quality titles in their collection and I always loved the art in Police, Plastic Man, Blackhawk etc..

These are such a cool mish mash, and I guess, expected for a foreign market to sell already paid for material ?

Berkley 1st print pb of The Past Through Tomorrow. 830 page book with a spine and edges like that? Good luck  

 

 

1st print pb of Farmer in the Sky is a Dell. Most of his  "Juvies" 1st pbs are Ace books,

Berkley 1st print of I Will Fear No Evil is not quite as high grade as those two but it's a tough black cover book that is also very thick so tough to find nice at all.

These are not 1st prints but are cool anyhoo.

Glory Road is an early, but not 1st Avon, with the second cover, which is more interesting than the first one. It is credited inside to Paul Lehr, who did the first cover, but obviously a mistake as this one is clearly not his (it is uncredited to my knowledge)

Citizen of the Galaxy & Space Cadet are 1st pb editions from Ace but are both 2nd prints. I still grabbed them for the condition was killers!

My first Sexton Blake, bought after magicrobot cited Story as a worthy author. Format is 64-page single-staple with full printed spine and nice graphics on inside covers. And Story's story does look like fun...
