This one was in such bad shape (a bit of bug burrow in the margins besides the outer condition), I hesitated at even a price tag of five bucks shipped, but it's an early Midwood with a great Chiriacka cover. Come to find out it's an Orrie Hitt, too, so score.  James Reasoner's got a good review on his blog as a nice cross of noir and sleaze, so that's good enough for me to toss it on the nightstand.  If I like it, maybe I'll hunt down a better copy.

5 bucks all in for a good read with a great cover that displays well. What a great hobby :)

Cover by Tom Barber.

Somehow, I've never heard of this guy or seen any of his art before.  I just Googled him and am really impressed--kind of like an intersection of Frazetta and Corben.

In fact, if you hadn't said the cover was by Barber, I might have thought it was by Corben.

I would have assumed it was Fabian without the clarification. I definitely like it. GOD BLESS ...

You've got to dig a bit to get to it, but a pal showed me this neat entry from Ken Quattro (easily one of the best writers on comics history) on Canadian publishers in the comics (and pulps and true crime mags), and it's got some good information on the News Stand Library / Newsstand Library paperback lines for those interested.:

Great title!  Does this take place in Boston?

Is there an easy way to tell the two Canadian lines apart from each other as far as format or whatnot?

The 1940's series are tall format, like Signets, and almost all thin page counts. IIRC they all mostly the same logo like the two posted and have that distended figure cover art (that kinda grows on ya). Jim Thompson's first pb and an early Goodis are in the line. The second series has a whole bunch of rare dust jacketed pbs.

The 1960's series are all short format, like Pocket books, and range from thin to thick page counts. I believe there are Newsstand Library logos and Newsstand "Magenta" logos but they all look pretty similar. Tons of great Bonfils covers, Sloan Britain (Elaine Williams') first book, Richard E. Geis, a bunch of Charles Willeford titles etc
