Detective Comics 31 (and other!) Recreations

25 posts in this topic

It's an iconic cover of the Golden Age.

From Scoop: "The image is a combination of terror, gothic horror, menace and even hints at the feel of a Universal Monster Movie. The man in the cowl is grim, unsmiling and his “eyes” slanted in pure concentration. His shoulders squared, the entire upper part of his body is hidden in darkness. There is only an upside down triangle of gray that slips out against the black of his cape. All we can see is the small image of a bat as an emblem on his chest.

In a night filled with the yellow of a full moon, the upper half of Batman towers over a mountain. The implication is obvious, he sees everything. Nothing will ever escape him

He is so large that the ears of his cowl even cut into the title. As if to say “this is my home now…”

Significantly as the fog swirls around in front of him, he isn’t coming through it. He is hanging back waiting to see exactly what is unfolding below. The image conveys complete confidence in what he is about to do. When the moment is right he will do what he needs to, he will never doubt the outcome.

Below him a red-hooded figure holds a limp and lifeless woman in his arms. The implication being that while being unconscious, or possibly even dead, the worst is yet to happen to her."

Neal Adams did the first recreation in 1970.

I came across this recreation and thought it would be fun to post any Tec 31 recreations out there. So, if you see one online, at a convention, have the artistic talent to create one, etc. then post it here (thumbs u
