What are some good upcoming conventions?

15 posts in this topic

I've never been to a comic book convention, but I'm very interested. I know there's one in Seattle in February, but I wanted to see if others had suggestions for which ones to hit. I'm interested to meet current creators as well as to buy back issues and such.

Also, if anyone has tips, I'd love to hear them.

Where are you located?

In that case.

For back issues and dealers I hear Wizard World Chicago is the best.

For pure spectacle, I would suggest San Diego Comic-con.

For artists and creators, I would think Wizard World New York is best.

Well then.

San Diego is huge, but is becoming less and less of a comic show every year. I'd recommend WizardWorld Chicago (August 5-7, 2005) or Baltimore (September 17-18) as very good COMIC shows. WonderCon in SF is equally good.

my point is just, there is no such thing as Wiz. World NY, so I didn't want anyone reading this to believe there is one... since you mentioned it by name.

And yes, since I'll be at the National most of the weekend, there is a big forum dinner and a lot of forumites coming out to have a good time.

Depends on what books you are looking for, and whether you care about guest stars and porno girls signing autographs.

Actually any show, even a small local show at the Hampton Inn, can be a good show if you end up finding something you want there at a good price.

I've made some of my best deals at small shows. The dealers are usually basement dealers with low overhead, need cash, and are open to trades too. Sometimes their prices are crazy but I've usually found them reasonable to deal with.

The big shows like Wizard World are a blast to attend, and of course the book selection is MUCH better. But having Darth Vader and Chewbacca and the kid from Lost in Space signing autographs at BrobdinagianCon doesn't mean diddly if you're there to get copies of Ultimate Spider-Man.

Comics Buyers Guide has a nice calendar section by state that lists some of the more common local shows as well as ads for the big Cons.

I would actually love to find a local comic show. Although I'd like to meet some creators and all that, but when it comes to buying books, I certainly wish there was something nearby. The last time I remember seeing/hearing about a comic show here in town was in the heat of the 90s rush.
