Comic Shops In Las Vegas

29 posts in this topic

Hey Guys!

In April, I'll be going to Las Vegas for the National Association of Broadcasters Conference and I was wondering what are some good comic shops I need to hit up.

I'm mostly interested in back issues from modern to SA and GA. I really like Four Color and Dell westerns and all kinds of other GA.

Any other comic book type things to do?

And aside from comics, what do I just absolutely need to do while I'm there? I've got some tickets to Penn and Teller, but I just want to know from a local, what I can't miss. I'll be there for 7 days, so plenty of time for everything.

I'm from Vegas and I still go there quite frequently. I even attended their comiccon back in June and got to meet Stan Lee! Anyways, If you are staying near the strip, check out Alternate Reality comics. If you want to drive a bit further for a larger shop, check out Maximum Comics.

Here's a link to some info on the shops there.

Comics shops in Vegas

As far as other things to do, the first thing that comes to mind is Rao's. It's one of the best restaurants in Vegas, and It's located inside Caesars Palace. My dad has been a Bellman at Caesars ever since it opened, so we have had comped food at Rao's in the past, pretty awesome! Anyways, there are only two Rao's in the entire world. The other one is in New York, there are only 10 tables available, and it's not unheard of for people to be put on a year long wait list. With that said, they thought it would be an excellent Idea to open a Rao's inside Caesars. I would definitely check it out! Have fun!

Also, If you're a Beatles fan, you gotta check out the Love show. It's a Cirque show that involves less acrobatics, but it's more visually stimulating. Another recommendation is Terry Fator. He's a ventriloquist that won the x factor show. He's downright hilarious, and I don't think the tickets are that expensive either.

I visited Las Vegas during free comic book day a couple of years ago and went to a store called Comic Oasis. The store was a pretty decent size with a nice mix of stuff plus the staff were all really friendly and helpful. The location isn't near the strip or downtown though so not sure how easy it will be for you to get to...

And our own Desert Wind Comics has opened up a brand new store in Vegas! I have not had the chance to go yet but it's called Supernova Comics and has a great location in downtown Vegas, right on Fremont street.

https://www.facebook.com/SupernovaComicsLV

The "Fremont Street Experience" is a must see, right after the strip itself. There are casino's, stores, etc etc and it's all under this giant canopy where they put on free light and music shows, it's a real trip and very fun! There are over 12 million lights and almost 600,000 watts of sound!

If you want to scare the shiz right out of you then go to the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino and ride the X-Scream. It sits outside on the very top of the Stratosphere. You get in and it literally takes you over the edge of the railing then drops you down so you are just floating hundreds of feet above ground. There are a couple of other cool rides up there too!

Thanks for the great info everyone!

I definitely LOVE rock music. I manage a rock radio station, so that's my kind of stuff.

I will be staying somewhere right next to the convention center, so that I can just walk to the conference, so I'm guessing right on the strip.

The Rock Vault and Human Nature are definitely on my list!

I wouldn't go on that damn coaster. It has already broken down once and people were stuck on it for hours.

I totally forgot about Desert Wind. Good call! (thumbs u

The roller coaster no longer exists. It was removed years ago, 2006 or so I think. You must be thinking of the new rides.

Insanity broke down during testing before it opened. The problem was a hydraulic line broke and sprayed hydraulic fluid all over Las Vegas Blvd.

Just after it opened, high winds caused it to shut down with a couple people stuck. The emergency system to bring the ride back in did not work properly.

Here is the PR release on it.

The X-Scream incident was caused by power being out in the area, not due to any malfunction.

These rides are inspected more than anything at Disneyland, due to sheer liability that could arise.

When they were opening the X-Scream, they had an employee naming contest for the ride. They did not choose my suggestion. I submitted "Oh, HELL NO!

Just after they opened it, they were letting the employees ride it first. I was on the observation deck watching. An older lady asked me if those were employees riding it. I said yes they were. She asked why they got to ride it first. Told her because it is a new ride and if something happened, employees were cheaper to replace than guests. When they ride started, everyone on the observation deck in unison, said "OH, HELL NO! Well not the exact word they used but it was also 4 letters long.

Yeah, I'm thinking of the X-Scream.

My uncle has been a construction worker in Vegas for 35 years, and he knows of the Stratosphere contractor. Apparently he is notorious for cutting corners to save a buck or two. Not exactly the kind of thing you want to hear when It comes to rides like these.

I worked there and I knew the people in charge of the ride. There were city inspectors there quite often. The staff also did inspections everyday before they opened. If any problems were found, they were fixed before they were allowed to open. Do you think that they would allow an unsafe ride to operate at 1000 feet? The liability would be insane.

Well, accidents do happen and I am not saying they won't. The fact is, the rides on the Stratosphere are inspected quite regularly.

Oh, and as far as the contractor goes. I am not saying they didn't try to cut corners, they probably did. Due to the reputation of the original owner, Bob Stupak and the crazy things he has done, the city inspectors were all over that building as it was built. I do not think that building is unsafe and I have been in just about every area of that place. Now that doesn't mean I didn't see things that I questioned, but, the building itself is fine.

I would agree with that as well. Btw, did you make it out to the comiccon back in June?
