Foreign Skywalds!!!! Cauchemar!!!! Cauchemar!!!!

22 posts in this topic

What is going on everyone. I thought that I would add a little more flavor to our beloved Magazine forum. To take a little bit of the edge off from the "Top 10" rankings. As I dig deeper through my collection I come across stuff I've forgot I had. Here though are actually some recent acquired foreign Skywald reprints. There are NO dates in these books anywhere. I have looked everywhere. Not even an artist leaving a date on their splash pages. None the less the individual that I purchased them from beleived them to be from the 70's and of French origin. Your going to see some weird stuff. Some Psycho books with cover swipes from Eerie Pub magazines. And also a few original art Psycho and Nightmare (Spelled Cauchemar in French). Lets get to it.

French Psycho's:

Has anyone seen the Scream and Nightmare "reprints" (for lack of a better term) that came out of Canada in the last couple years? confused-smiley-013.gif

I have seen mags that appeared to reprint some Scream/Nightmare from last yr. Did not know they were from Canada. Great intro for those that don't have access to the original 70s mags. hi.gif

I saw a couple of the Canadian "reprints" up close and was somewhat let down. Opted not to buy them. The cover stock and binding were top notch, but I think only printed single sided if I remember rightly. Binding was very nice.

I think the interiors looked like they were simply xeroxed directly from the original mags minus the ads, instead of original art, because you can see where the page color/yellowing was reproduced. Another let down!

No new material of commentary/information was presented at all. Another bummer.

sorry.gif

I think these were priced at like $6 or $7 each. I passed, considering original reader copies can still be found for a less.

Hi Bounty,

These covers are truly astonishing. If ever I get the opportunity to update and expand the SKYWALD HORROR-MOOD book, I would love to include some of those!

Be my guest buddy. I've seen a few more over the years of the Psycho's I think that they were the UK versions. Pretty cool covers that actually resembled Original Skywald cover art. I unfortunately passed up on them though. They are tough buggers to find.

Sorry, I may have spoken too soon. I "Believe" the Martin Poll covers are by Roberto Martinez who also signed artwork with the name Martin Sauri. There is also a Martin Poll signed cover on Marvel's Vampire Tales # 9 or 10 that is credited to JAD {who I do not believe did the artwork. Who can give us more information?

The Vampire Tales cover first appeared in the late 60s on the cover of the 4th issue of a Spanish magazine called Dossier Negro published by an outfit called Ibero Mundial De Ediciones. The artist is called Josep Marti Ripoll and he did most of the first 30 or so covers. Check out this link for Tebeosfera, the Spanish version of the Grand Comics Databse:

http://www.tebeosfera.com/obras/numeros/dossier_negro_imde_1968_4.html

That is a great site covering hundreds of Spanish comics.

Another site called Telefonica has a very good archive of Dossier Negro:

http://www.telefonica.net/web2/fantagore/dn10/dn10.html

This magazine lasted 217 issues (and 6 "Extras" what we call annuals) and had 3 different publishers. The 1st few issues seem to be domestic material then they begin to reprint Warren and later Skywald for several years. Eventually they run Red Circle and DC material among many other things.

There are also some Skywald stories and covers in various issues of Vampus (the early 70's Spanish version of Creepy), Rufus (The Spanish version of Eerie), and SOS (check out this link for a look at a more complete version of this late Psycho cover: http://www.tebeosfera.com/obras/numeros/sos_edival_1975_21.html )

There are dozens of great examples of covers by Boada,Faba, JAD and etc. that would have looked great on a Warren or Skywald magazine.

Other titles worth looking at include:

Creepy(Starts with Warren reprints before becoming it's own sort of thing),

Dracula (Bea, Maroto & Sio this was where the Warren Dracula book came from),

Escalfrio (Marvel B&W reprints and many nice covers by Lopez Espi),

Escorpion (Cheesy swipe filled covers, many by Scream cover artist Brea) ,

Espectros (Espi & Faba),

Fantom (even more Espi).

Hembras(Italian reprints with great covers of horror material often verging into Eerie Publication excess yet done in the style of romance paperbacks. Did not care for the examples of the actual strips though),

Horror (more Italian reprints),

Horror (different series by a different publisher with some Faba covers and the cover to Scream 2)

Monsters (even more Italian),

Morbo (Nice covers),

Panico (More cheese and Brea),

Terror Grafico (More Maroto),

Vampirella (a mid 70's and late 70's/80's series from two differnt publishers. More Warren),

Zona 84 (SF, fantasy and Heavy Metal type materal),

Zora (Italian yet again)

1984 (Warren and Heavy Metal type material).

The Australian company, Gredown published over 300 titiles reprinting comics from Atlas, Atlas Seaboard, Buru Lan (60's Maroto), Charlton, DC ,Eerie Publications, Marvel, Red Circle, Vilmar (the Spanish titles Escorpion & Panico), Warren ect.

Despite the high quality of some of this material they seem to have been a shlock house in the tradition of Eerie Publications. Note the ugly sloppy lettering and the almost surreal uncommercial titles of some of these things:

Covers were often reprinted, Go here to see the cover of Psycho 7:

Who Knew that this cover which is always attributed to Miralles was actually done by Enrich.

Here are a couple of covers from the Spanish company Vilmar:

Jayman,

That is a great cover and the one I had in mind when I started looking into Dossier Negro.

Blob,

I'm pretty sure Greydown just used whatever was paid for and laying around.

The Spanish and French stuff probably involved licesning and what the editor found appealing.

I'm amazed at how often covers were reused such as the one for Scream 11 which pops up at least 3 or 4 times on as many different series. It's also confusing how so many different publishers could run the same material at about the same time.

Lopez Espi redrew or repainted a lot of Marvel covers for Escalofrio, Fantom and Spanish super hero titles reprinting things such as Conan and Silver Surfer.

The number of swipes on many of these is also amusing.

Some of the Vilmar covers feature some of the most blatant appropriations of Frazetta and Sanjulian I have ever seen.

I think Tebosfera shows examples of art from the shorter Monster series featuring some interior work where the very styles of artists like Auraleon, Maroto and Torrents are copped by other artists much in the manner of the work Skywald published for an artist called Bob Martin/Roberto Martinez (his real name may be Jose Maria Martin Sauri) who apes Maroto (the story "God of the Dead" uses entire panels from a Creepy story called "The Cross of Blood") and Frazetta to an alarming degree.

I have the sites bookmarked. (thumbs u

I spent about an hour last night going through the covers on the DN site. There are some nice originals in the mix of swipes and reused ones.

Here's another foreign title that has some nice covers...

That is a cool Brea cover.

It pops up on an issue of Escorpion also.

I wonder what the story is on Terror? Portuguese Vilmar reprints?

They had Vampirella and a knock off version called Zakarella too.

Oh, by the way, Page Publications and maybe K. G. Murray also reprinted Skywalds in Australia.

I have a handfull of Terrors I picked up here on the boards a few years back.

I'll have to dig them out and give them a second look.

Meanwhile here are the UK editions of Nightmare...

Great looking British versions!

Here is a link to a Portuguese version of the Grand Comic Database for the title Terror. Seems to be mostly Spanish Vilmar material though some of the later covers do not seem to come from them (I could be wrong). It ran a whopping 104 issues!

http://www.bdportugal.info/Comics/Col/Adulto_extra/APR_Terror/col.html

Here's one for the Portuguese Vampirella on the same site:

http://www.bdportugal.info/Comics/Col/Adulto_PPress/Vampirella/index.html

And here is one for Zakarella. This seems to be Creepy and Eerie reprints with amazingly bright good looking covers:

I never heard of this till last night. This cover artist, Carlos Alberto Santos almost looks like someone working today rather than 30 something years ago. wow.
