Key - Sells for at least $100 in mid grade, over $1,000 in high-grade

Mega Key - Sells for at least $1,000 in mid grade, over $5,000 in high-grade

Grail - Sells for at least $10,000 in mid grade, for over $100,000 in high-grade

Holy Grail - Sells for at least $100,000 in mid grade, for over $1,000,000 in high-grade

 

if the book can't top $1000 in high-grade, it hasnt really proven itself to be a key imo.

 

Market value is a function of supply and demand. Demand is influenced by "keyness" and supply has nothing to do with "keyness."

Key- a book with significant importance due to first appearance, death, event, etc (ie: Hulk 181)

 

Grail- Very very Expensive book, usually a key but not necessarily

(ie: Amazing Fantasy 15)

 

Ultra key/mega key- meaningless adjective given in an attempt to rank books

As others have said, Grails are books that you personally want more than anything else regardless of whether anyone else cares about the book or not. For instance, Boy Comics #3 is a grail of mine.

 

Keys, on the other hand, are books of importance and relevance to the hobby, such as DC 100 Page Super Spectacular #5.
