STAR WARS #42

85 posts in this topic

Marvel Super Special 16 is my sleeper pick. I have picked up a few but was watching a few of them on eBay at a reasonable price. I went on the next day and they were all sold through BIN. Not only is this Fettt"s first appearance but I believe it is Yodas too. And it also has the Luke I am your father line. I have a feeling this is going to take off.

I also happen to like 42 because Fett is on the cover.

42 and 68 seem to be hot issues with Bobba Fett. Not gonna lie...been picking up a few 42s' myself.

68 isn't even a Boba Fett story. He is shown in one or two panels in flashback. The Mandalorian in the story is a character named Fenn Shysa. Interestingly, this story has been pretty much been de-canonized by the Clone Wars TV series.

:gossip: The most significant Boba Fett story in the Marvel run is Star Wars 81.

I think all the original Marvel Boba Fett covers are awesome myself. :cloud9:

Famous Monsters of Filmland #165 (7/1980) also has him on the cover; it came out after MSS 16 (I believe), but definitely 1st Boba Fett on cover.

MSS 16 & SW 42 are getting pricey…maybe this one slips under the radar? (Granted, its a mag…will probably never go anywhere)

Of course, all I care about is Boba Fett getting that one-shot movie…great time to be a Star Wars fan.

Are newsstand versions more collectable...or, doesn't it make a difference?

On this book, newsstand editions are more common than direct editions.

It came out in the period when there was a transition to direct editions and in a few short years, direct editions were dominant.

I pulled some numbers from my personal collection on this issue and the surrounding issues:

Star Wars 29 - 4 newsstand, 2 direct

Star Wars 30 - 4 newsstand, 2 direct

Star Wars 31 - 2 newsstand, 2 direct

Star Wars 32 - 4 newsstand, 3 direct

Star Wars 33 - 4 newsstand, 2 direct

Star Wars 34 - 2 newsstand, 2 direct

Star Wars 35 - 3 newsstand, 3 direct

Star Wars 36 - 6 newsstand, 2 direct

Star Wars 37 - 3 newsstand, 3 direct

Star Wars 38 - 4 newsstand, 6 direct

Star Wars 39 - 2 newsstand, 6 direct

Star Wars 40 - 2 newsstand, 4 direct

Star Wars 41 - 2 newsstand, 6 direct

Star Wars 42 - 5 newsstand, 3 direct

Star Wars 43 - 3 newsstand, 8 direct

Star Wars 44 - 1 newsstand, 5 direct

Star Wars 45 - 3 newsstand, 5 direct

Star Wars 46 - 1 newsstand, 3 direct

Star Wars 47 - 1 newsstand, 3 direct

Star Wars 48 - 1 newsstand, 2 direct

Star Wars 49 - 3 newsstand, 2 direct

Star Wars 50 - 5 newsstand, 5 direct

Star Wars 51 - 2 newsstand, 4 direct

After looking at these numbers, I think I'm wrong about there being more newsstand copies than direct copies. I'm guessing there is probably a fairly equal number of newsstand and direct copies. For issue 42, I just happen to have more newsstand copies, but overall, I see the trend from newsstand to direct copies changed around issue 38 in my collection. Prior to this issue, the number of newsstand copies definitely dominate over direct copies. By the time you get into issue number 70 and up, the newsstand copies in high grade really starts to diminish to the point where a hight grade newsstand copy of any issue 90 and up is pretty hard to come by.

I collect only high grade (NM- or better) copies of Marvel Star Wars comics. My sources are comic shops, conventions, and E-Bay. While this is by no means a scientific conclusion, I suspect I'm pretty close in my guesstimate for this issue.

And for no reason, I will point out that Star Wars 3 is the Marvel Star Wars comic I have the most copies of. It has my favorite cover of the run. There are colors on this cover that are reminiscent of Marvel's Silver Age and I have a hard time passing up a high grade copy when I see one. Here is the breakdown of what is in my collection:

Star Wars 3A - 2 CGC 9.6 newsstand copies (3A), 23 newsstand copies

Star Wars 3B - 4 direct copies

Star Wars 3E - 4 direct copies - reprint on cover

Star Wars 3F - 1 newsstand copy - reprint on cover

Star Wars 3G - 1 12 pence copy

Star Wars 3C is $0.35 newsstand variant and 3D is direct reprint on indicia only.

And pictures from the collection:

Is Star Wars 42 getting to be a big deal?

With the new Star Wars movies announced along with spinoff movies like Boba Fett, the issue has been seeing strong movement for the past year. NM copies in raw are getting $30-50. I've seen CGC 9.6s fetching around $100-125.

I would love to have a copy of 3C. I had bought one last year, but I posted on these boards about how the package was bent in half in the mail (clearly damaging the comic) and I couldn't bear to open it. I sent it back to the seller without opening and got my money back. Prior to this I bought a Star Wars 2 $0.35 copy from Koch in NY and they "lost" the comic and I never received it but I did get a refund. My luck with the $0.35 test market Star Wars comics has been dismally low. :sorry:

I'm finding getting a copy of 1, 2, 3 (direct reprint in indicia only - blank UPC) and 4 (direct reprint in indicia and on cover - blank UPC) in NM condition extremely difficult to find. They are out there, but every time I see a copy, they are beat up. Basically, I'm looking for the first 3 issues on this link that are on the bottom row and the number 4 on the second to the last row in NM condition:

I have all the others with the exception of these 4 variants and the 4 $0.35 test market copies. Someday ...
