originalisbest
More EC sci-fi, there are so many covers I like -- but if I had to get down to picking just a few, this would make that cut... originalisbest
This particular book started a lot of good memories for me. My first eBay EC, back in '98. Crossposted from the recent PCH thread. The Lions Den, Larryw7 and chevalmeow
KirbyJack
My first eBay EC was Mad 1. I vividly remember watching the seconds count down. I was elated, and felt like I had just joined a great club. It was the only time buying something on eBay felt like a “win”. 1950's war comics and originalisbest

Big thanks to - who else? - EC Ed for starting me off on this mini-obsession with HOF 28 and, appropriately enough, helping me finally complete the run with HOF 22. Nearly half the books in the shot are Ed's undercopies with a couple of copies from Ipsunburst and the rest via Bob Storms, Dale Roberts, Cloud 9 Comics and EBay. The run is mainly in mid-grade (5.0 - 7.0) with one restored copy ("tear seal to cover"). For me, there is something about EC comics, particularly the horror, that lends itself to collecting mid-grade copies. Every time I see a frayed corner, a collection of creases or a rolled spine I picture some kid in the fifties hiding beneath his blanket, reading these comics by flashlight and generally having the $#!+ scared out of him and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Thanks all! Oh man...can't believe I went to all that trouble of taking a group shot and left ONE out! Here she is, last but not least (and Ingels first HOF cover, btw)...Haunt of Fear #11! Popular Post ThothAmon
I’ve had this book a long time. Never really understood how Panic fit into Gaines plan for EC. It appears he was trying to rip off his own Mad success? Pretty book though. Black_Adam, originalisbest, The Lions Den and 2 others

Been a while since I read it, and I may have this all wrong, but I think in the Ten Cent Plague they explained that Al Feldstein was envious of Kurtzman's success with Mad and twisted Bill Gaines' arm until Gaines - against his better judgement - allowed Feldstein to proceed with Panic, which was basically a ripoff of Mad and served to only further alienate Kurtzman. Agreed - while VoH 35 does not have a gruesome cover, it's pending bloody terror in contrast with the Xmas theme is second-to-none. One of EC's best, IMHO. originalisbest, Larryw7 and Black_Adam

Because at the time Ed was located in Chicago, pre-Heritage, and back in eBay days of '98-99ish, he invited me to just come by his business offices to check out books to buy, which I was able to do over my lunch hours. From there, I got to occasionally help him out at Chicago shows, which is how I got to know a bunch of other great dealers. My only regret with Ed is that I wasn't more flush than I was, to get even more books at that time!
