Could be scanner effect and not as heavy in hand as you think.

Mine looked exactly as they are in the scan, but you may be right: Meeklo’s scan are a bit dark.

As you see, very similar situation.

Well, they make sense as you read the story, but indeed it was one of the covers I liked less when I purchased the run in the early 1990s and saw most of them for the first time (in italian, when I read them as a kid, they were published without the covers).
