Jens/all,

I want you to consider the following when launching into a censorship crusade:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

For my fellow admirers of the female form, keep doing what makes you happy.

Bah. That's a croc. The complete supression of any form of expression is intolerable. The appropriate CATEGORIZATION of when and where certain types of free expression are allowed is just fine. For instance, porn trailers inserted into the beginnings of Disney movies is an offensive idea. If you'd like to put those trailers on other porn movies, more power to ya.

This is a comics forum. The purpose is to discuss comics. The visitors here are a range of people who ALL enjoy comics, but who have varying levels of appreciation for half nude women. Therefore, communications that are offensive to a good percentage of the visitors here are going to be met with restrictions. Nobody is telling you that you can't hang those pictures in your house, or swap pictures like that someplace else on the internet (and believe me there are plenty of places). What I'm telling you is that there's a line on these boards in regards to how risque these icons will be allowed to get, and right now we're crossing it. You want pics of women as your icons, fine, but if you wouldn't find the picture on the cover of a magazine at the check out counter in a major grocery store, then it's not likely to be welcome here.

Yes, that means you Rick. tongue.gif

Perhaps everyone should post avatars of Cherry Poptart, it is a comic after all.

Perhaps scenes from the XXX-Men or any of the R.Crumb stuff - have you even read any of the Zap comics, pretty risqué ( and offensive sometimes.) Would they more or less offensive then pictures of women that have been up here? None of them are nude and all of them you would find in a Maxim magazine, Sports Illustrated, or Cosmopolitan. Do you think the same thing would have happened if the avatars were of men posted by women? Probably not. I can understand Architects position ( and what he has to do) and a little ( very little, infinitesimally little ) of Jens but I think people take things far too seriously in this day and age of political correctiveness.

PS - I thought this thread was started by a woman until someone corrected me, I was confusing Jens25 with another poster and I assumed he was a she.

Edited portion

"The only person who had a slight problem with the avatars initially was , big a surprise, a women ( no offense intended.) "

Seriously, I can understand how Joanna feels.

My background is in CS with a specialization in Computer Graphics research.

Among my male colleagues, it is very popular to test new software on 3d

scans of women's bodies. You even see many scientific publications which

feature images of nude female scans, which supposedly is meant to be funny.

I didn't think much about this until I started working with a young female

professor in the Ph.D. program in CS at MIT. Watching how much [!@#%^&^] she

had to take from sexist colleagues in an entirely male dominated world

really opened my eyes to what it's like to be a female minority in a bull-

pen environment. Maybe if she had not had to deal with harrassment and

condescending male colleagues on a daily basis, it would have been more

fun for her to watch us goof around with those 3d nude models.

To a guy, joking about nude pictures of women, whether they be 3d scans or

avatars, may not be a big deal. But I can certainly see why a woman with an

interest in comics would feel offended looking at some of the pics around

here. Let's just try to be a little considerate...

I can completely respect what you're saying. But please don't forget that it is WOMEN who are posing for these things in the first place.

If women want these sex-object portrayals to stop, then WOMEN have to stop portraying themselves as sex objects and take responsibilty. Is it not women who are getting a record number of breat implants every year? And then these same women complain that men only look at their breasts? Men are visually oriented, and these industries use that to cash in. But it's the women who really drive these business' by doing the work!

Look, I realize it is also up to men to take responsibility and respect women, but this is a 2 way problem, and it seems that men are usually the ones who get blamed.

I've had a total of three avatars since I've been here...

1) The current one, and my long-time favorite: Emperor Palpatine saying "Whassup!" from the parody website PulpPhantom.com

2) A punishment avatar of the Wake Forest Demon Deacon, after my Ducks took the cash and ran in the Seattle Bowl

3) And a porn-related avatar (albeit a completely clean one) - A closeup of a Cherry Poptart Fan Club pin

I appreciate the female form as much as the next guy, and am a firm believer in the adage "The naked female is beautiful, the naked male is humorous". But I admit I have PM'd Arch about inappropriate avatars in the past, usually when they involve full frontal nudity.

I sell upwards of 2000 adult comics every year, ranging from Cherry Poptart to Bondage Fairies to Small Favors to Lurid to Milk to Urotsukidoji... but you'd better believe that no 10-year-old girl walking into my shop would ever know that. How does that South Park line go? "There's a time and place for everything. It's called college." I think some of the folks here need to remember that the CGC forum is not a private club, and it's not a frat house either...

After reading this thread I went and surfed a few other threads just to see how many 'potentially offensive' avatars were out there, and frankly it's not many. There are a TON of comic-related avatars in use in our forums. But the T&A tends to stand out. Which is a shame. I kinda like being able to identify posters by their avatars. I see Thanos' ugly mug, I know it's a post about the downfall of collecting as we know it. I see Supergirl in mid-followthru, I know it's our resident Den Mother. But several locals seem to rotate between different pieces of eye candy...

I mean I suppose I could change my avatar to an image by Félicien Rops, or Suzanne Ballivet, or Gerda Wegener, or Georges de Sainte Croix... but for now, I guess I'll keep the Emperor... Just suits my lifestyle better I suppose...
