Yes, S-E-X is B-A-D and should be hidden away only to be spoken of as a way to propagate the human race. wink.gif

Sorry Rick(ariach) - That's not a jab at you (well maybe a little), but it's not meant to irritate you. wink.gif

The avatar's don't bother me, but then I don't have any kids to worry about. I'm a very tired of everyone using the excuse of 'It's For The Children.' Bllleeecchhch...makes me want to vomit everytime I hear that. I certainly approve of Ricky removing his at the request of others. Self-censorship is always preferred over 'The local Village' telling me not to do something in case it causes emotional damage to my neighbors kid. I'm sure if and when I have children my over-the-top drive to protect them from everything will prompt me to join the bandwagon, but until then I will cry foul when we do it all for the children.

And before some of you think I'm a 'love your neighbor - free love hippie' - my wife has been (and ever will be) the only sexual partner I've been with.

O.K! Now that I've probably put my foot in mouth - let the you-know-what hit the fan. wink.gif

Well...I did not really say that S-E-X is B-A-D. I just meant that it is far to routine in our society and that is has affected our morals to the extent that we allow more than what we used to.

And it's ok Scottish, I am not irritated that easily.... wink.gif

I think that the self censorship of Ricky (as an example) shows that he actually cares about other people as much as he does himself. My opinion is that Ricky did this not because he was forced into it , rather, he was more concerned about the people viewing the avatars in question and decided that it was a better (more moral) thing to remove it for "village harmony".

Note: I only used Ricky as an example here since his name is most prevelant in this discussion.

JMHO.... crazy.gif

I haven't been able to play the puzzles as I am reluctant to download the new version of quicktime...

It's Shockwave, not quicktime. But I understand your reluctance. I often avoid new software if I don't absolutely need it.

I think the most important point is how each person view the avatars -- are they considered risqué and bordering on that which is pornographic or are they considered artistic? When I look at them, I see some of both; but one thing I consider is the manner in which the subject is portrayed. If a women is shown wearing a small amount of clothing and is in a provocative pose with her legs wide apart, what is that supposed to mean? I think it's pretty clear and I don't think that belongs here. On the other hand, if someone were to use an image of a nude figure that was part of a noted photography exhibition or an artistic rendering that was used in a comic book, that could be something completely different. Quite often it is not the subject itself, but the INTENDED PURPOSE of the image and our perception based on that purpose.

Realistically, I don't think there is anyone here who didn't view some of the images (avatars) as being highly sexually suggestive, and to that extent, I think the underlying theme or tone of the board was headed in an unappealing direction. Some may even argue that the images here are rather "tame" compared to those on supermarket magazine covers, on television or in movies, but that's really a poor and abject justification -- if others wish to express those types of sentiments, there are plenty of other message boards where they can post all the provocative images they want.

BOfC,

You are correct, but many who first come here are not aware of that option. Also, what would it say about this forum if it were to become a message board where there were hundreds of pornographic images and where a majority of the members had turned off their display preferences. That seems strange and perverse.

Put your "Playgirl" down for a moment and listen to me.

Huh?

What you said above, is sending me a double standard message

Really? Okay, I'll try again. If you're at the beach and a woman walks by wearing a bathing suit, then I would assume most people would think she is dressed appropriately. If you're at a board meeting, and the VP of sales walked in wearing a bathing suit, I would assume most people would think she is dressed inappropriately. The message here is that there is a time when it is absolutely acceptable to dress in a bathing suit, and others when it is not. This is a comic forum. Avatars of comic book characters -- even if clipped from the marvel swimsuit edition -- are appropriate here. It's the theme of the boards. Crusty had a character with a big butt as the avatar of his Prophet alias. I wasn't fond of the image, but I would never have objected to it, because it's a comic forum, and that was a comic character. Swimsuit on the beach.

Thank you for explaining the difference to me "your worship"!

Your worship?

Why did you intentionally take me out of my intended context, did you not see the emotion icons?

No, I didn't, I'm sorry. I tend not to notice emoticons. In fact, I rarely 'see' them at all. My eye just skips over them.

I thought you might get a laugh out of what I said in a playful manner, but obviously not.

Sorry, I misread it, obviously.

Look Joanna, if there are any hard feeling between us for a comment I made some time ago in jest, then I'm sorry, I didn't mean anything by it, and truthfully I sent out the wrong message, and I should have held my tongue. But your response, especially the last thing you said, makes me wonder if your not "grinding an axe" with me.

umm... I have no idea what you're refering to. I'm not real big on carrying grudges, or axe grinding. And I can't recall any set-to's we've had. At least, nothing that I would carry with me past a post or two.

I was just responding to the message, not the messenger, MoS.

I know you didn't say sex was bad, (just playing the devil's advocate) and I have to agree that it is much more prevelant that it was say 20-30 years ago. Agreement again that Ricky wasn't forced into doing what he did...I would have done the same, but then I wouldn't have posted such an avatar to begin with (not that there's anything wrong with that! wink.gif ). Kudos to Ricky for policing himself - I wish more people (in general - not this forum) would do that. Kudos to Arch as well for just not yanking the things on his own (as he could have) and asking that we do it ourselves.

I'm an amiable fellow. I won't force my views and/or lifestyle on you so long as you don't force your views and/or lifestyle on me. wink.gif

I believe there is an option to not view avatars for those who wish to do so.

Well where's the fun in that ? I find a lot of the comic related avatars fascinating. They are also an easy way to scroll down a long list of posts and be able to recognize the posters without having to read names.

Yeah, but your current self-portrait scares certain people! frown.gifmad.gif
