A question for our British members.

30 posts in this topic

My nephew will be living in your country for a year starting in November. He will be teaching at an American school on an American military base. Under the terms of his contract, he can bring over quite a lot of stuff with him, freight free.

Here is the question, one I asked a few years ago when he spent a semester there as a student, but am wondering if market conditions have changed.

Is there a market there for American comics? Either low grade SA stuff or midgrade BA stuff or even CA stuff? Is it worth our time to set him up with a dozen or so long boxes of such stuff? Could he get $1.00 or more for books that go for 3$1 here? Thanks.

:o

$100 for books that are 3/$1 ??? A 30000% mark-up?

You do know they have a working postal service, right? They also have automobiles, bottled-water and cell phones there. So you might not find much market for sending those over there either.

Is your nephew traveling over seas or forward in time?

Short answer no. Not unless you boulght your books for $1 - $3 in 2001 ;)

Longer-ish answer yes there is a huge market in the UK for all sorts of books, but not at the prices or quick flip you are suggesting.

I believe that the treaty of Ghent, which ended the war of 1812 has a condition in it that the British would stop pressing American sailors into British naval service if we agreed to keep all of the American dreck on this side of the Atlantic.

You see, he's holding a modern (contemporary) in this painting as an example of what not to send over again:

Little known fact that an obscure provision in the Magna Carta allowed for the distribution of "sequentially illustrated pamphlets"

That's true. A clause had to be incorporated into the Magna Carta to protect comic books here in England, because of a worrying comment made by King John.

'The Bayeux Tapestry - sequential art, isn't it? It's a bit rubbish now, though, in these modern times, a bit old-fashioned. The style's had a good run, over a hundred years, but it's dying out now, no future in it, still loved only by village insufficiently_thoughtful_persons and dateless fanboys hiding away in the monasteries.'

Something had to be done.

It's much more fun if you just describe which is the one dealer who isn't an a-hole and then we work out if it's Garry or not.

Since I only usually do around four per year, I tend to be in different places each time, it's been different for the last few times.

If it helps, I look like this but usually I look a little more animated.

Even if it turns out that I'm not an a-hole, we'll then have Phil posting here with a :taptaptap:
