Listen to the quiet inner voice !!

20 posts in this topic

It's weird. 3 or 4 times now over the last couple of weeks..... an idea.... a feeling.... a memory of endless hours of enjoyment.... has invaded my regular thought life and called me to return to the joyous abandonment of it's pages. So deciding to ignore the quiet voice no longer..... I thought it was time to act.

What was the idea?

What was the feeling?

What was the memory?

It was something stored in the garage..... and it was time (after quite a few years) to go out there and rip off the tape and packaging and indulge once again in its wonderment.

I'll let these pictures tell the story :popcorn:

And which one did I decide on?

Maybe it's the Fall weather. Maybe it's Halloween nearly here. But this one practically called to me.... and I'm diggin the read .

Listen my friends.... to the quiet voice inside :insane:

I recently read all the RE Howard Conans again for the first time in 40 years. It was like reading them for the first time..... many I didn't even remember at all. Did the same with Lovecraft and am thinking about revisiting ERB again. GOD BLESS....

That's some good reading there Jimbo. I had the Lancer Conan's at one time (12 I think hm )

ERB is gonna take you some time though. There's like 50 of em... maybe more !! But dang good stuff. My meat and potato's during high school. I think I learned everything there is to know about chivalry from ERB

It's funny you keep your Doc Savage PB's hidden in a brown paper bag like a secret porn stash.

I never in a million years would have thought of that !! Are you giving away personal secrets here ?? :baiting:

I've been toying with re reading my Conan Lancer paperbacks. I haven't read them since I was 12 or 13, and that was many, many years ago around the time they first came out.

This thread may convince me to do so.

Never read the Doc Savage paperbacks, but have fond memories of reading Conan, The Avenger and The Shadow, as well as the various Black Mask type anthologies that came out back in the 70s. The one that disappointed was reading a Spider paperback, it made the Shadow read like Hammett or Chandler.

The Avenger is also by Kenneth Robeson aka Lester Dent. I think there are a lot of people who don't realize the extent of Dent's influence on the world of pop culture and science fiction today. Arguments can be made that Doc Savage is the seed that gave the world Superman, and certainly Superman's Fortress of Solitude. Also Spock's neck pinch grab and a bunch of others. Since you've never read a Doc Savage story and if you like pulp fiction, I suggest you wait no longer. Each one is a fun filled ride through adventure, science and danger, although they take place in the world of New York and the world of the 1930's.

Also, this book is a cool read about L.D. and the only one I could find. Funny how little biographies there are about the people who wrote, drew, published and or contributed to any part of this hobby we all love. It's always nice to find a book like this.

Also Edmond Hamilton-he wrote many sci fi pulps as well as the Captain Future series-and later when he scripted for DC several of his Captain Future stories were mirrored in Superman stories-like where Captain Future and Superman were both stranded on a planetoid and had to build a spacecraft from scratch, mining ores etc.

Is he credited somewhere for his stories ?
