Underground Comix-Ask Eggs

33 posts in this topic

Cherry is mostly porn, not a true underground to me like the late 60's, early 70's comix. However, it was quite popular and sold well enough to have 22 issues and a couple of offshoots (back issues sell really well). They are often difficult to find in high grade. (VF or better)

How do enthusiasts like yourself view books like Cherry in the history of undergrounds?

I'd say it qualifies as much as any other 80s/90s underground. Larry Welz clearly has his roots in the heyday of Undergrounds, and combines humor and at times social commentary in his stories, two hallmarks of the 60s/70s era of underground comix. While it might be subtle, I see a difference between the Cherry books and much of the straight up comix porn but out by Eros, Carnal and the like, though given influence of "tijuana bibles" on underground comix, they might be considered undergrounds as well.

It definitely is not like the Eros type comics which were 100% porn. I agree that Cherry is underground related and does have redeeming qualities (humor & social commentary) that is missing in the Eros type comics.. I personally divide underground comix into silver, bronze & modern eras with anything after 1982ish being modern.

Of course it is Steve, it is just past my time as I am now officially an old Hippie, stuck in the 60's. BTW, I have a couple of Cherry minis that I will eventualy let go to the right person (and a bunch of graded 9.8 file copies)..

If the price is right they still sell very well. I still think the are a real bargain due to their scarcity (low print runs, etc) especially in higher grades (VF or better).

Good to see you again, Eggs --

Would you say demand for second & subsequent printings of most 60s/70s UG books is rising/falling or flat?
