Thing (1983-1986 1st Series)

This is The Thing from the Fantastic Four in his own series

There are 36 issues, but the first 1-14 were written by John Byrne and are incredible, very moving, some of the best comic book writing I've seen IMO.

Super cheap too, MCS has them all for less than $2 an issue in most cases.

Two top-tier cheap series immediately come to mind:

The Spectre run by John Ostrander & Tom Mandrake and the 1999 - 2006 run of JSA. :cloud9:

And if you like your DCU galactic in scale it's tough to beat the Jim Starlin/Mike Mignola Cosmic Odyssey 4-part arc. Really good stuff.

I'd also add the overlooked Superman: Exile storyline. It's like a prequel to the whole 'Death of' stuff that follows. Thirteen issues: Superman 28-30, 32, 33, Adventures of Superman issues 451-456 and Action Comics 643 and Annual 2.

Here's another dirt-cheap great, with the Season quickly headed our way...

Christmas with the Super-Heroes #2.

It's almost impossible to explain just how good this one book truly is. I don't know about the other issues in the CwtSH series, but #2 contains some mindblowingly excellent stories, six tales all together.

There's a unique and haunting Superman tale by Paul Chadwick (Concrete) that'll stay with you long after you put the book down. There's a wordless Enemy Ace "Silent Night" by John Byrne, and a cool Deadman story with a surprising twist.

Don't let the goofy cover art fool you. I'd put the stories right up there among the best comics have to offer. No joke.

You can probably pick up Ultimates Vol 1 and Vol 2 for pretty cheap. Identity Crisis was really good.

PPTSSM #107-110 is a classic and can probably be found for $2-3/book.

Batman: The Long Halloween back issues are probably cheap ad a great story.
