Marvel hand painted animation cell

Anyone know anything about these? I found a few at a local LCS. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. I couldn't find any online to gauge value. Sorry for the bad upside down pics. Thanks.

Just like with any original artwork, there are a lot of factors to consider in determining the value of the cel. Characters shown, episode importance, 1st appearances, are their eyes open?, etc.

Additionally, there are a few different kinds of cels:

Production cels were hand painted and actually photographed to be used in the cartoon/movie. They are all one-of-a-kind, although there can be many that are similar due to the nature of animation.

Sericels or limited edition cels are sometimes hand painted, but they were not actually photographed and used for production. These were created after the fact for collectors. They are similar to prints as opposed to original paintings.

Additionally, the backgrounds can have a great effect on the value. There might only be one hand-painted BG for dozens or even hundreds of foreground cels. Because of this, most animation cels are sold with reproduction backgrounds so they look nice. They are often referred to as "laser BGs", "repro BGs", "copy BGs", "presentation BGs" etc. Obviously the original hand-painted backgrounds are more valuable.

Yet another consideration is if the background actually matches the cels. Often times, especially with lower valued cels, hand-painted backgrounds are stuck together with any cel that looks good, regardless of whether its from the same scene, episode or even series. Having a matching BG/FG set (called a setup) is ideal.

All that said....these particular cels seem to be production, with production backgrounds that seem to match. Nice!

The range on the Apocalypse setup is probably at $50-$150, maybe more as the movie gets closer to coming out.

The Cyclops setup is probably $75-$175 I would guess.

Checking the Heritage archives is a good suggestion.

Great information. Thanks a lot. I did check the heritage archives, but I couldn't find anything exactly like that. Between that and ebay (and googling) I have yet to see something that has that certificate of authenticity from Marvel (third pic) and none of them seem to have that Marvel seal you can see on both pics.

If you're a fan of the cartoon series where they appeared I think they're nice (and relatively inexpensive) items to have.

Wouldn't mind owning some examples from the 1960s Spider-man and Fantastic Four cartoons which I enjoyed watching as a kid - not that I recall seeing any of those coming up for sale . . .
