Dredd Sequel Is Deadd

29 posts in this topic

Judge Dredd was a good movie, but for some reason it got lost at the box office.

Same thing with John Carter.

hm

It was clear with John Carter, and purposely done. Go back and read that thread when you get the chance.

Dredd was so good, I actually set out to buy Stallone's Judge Dredd for more Dredd goodness. In hindsight, should have bought The Raid: Redemption instead.

Dredd was decent. Way, way better than John Carter.

Know what was good to go along with them?

The Lone Ranger reboot 2013.

What killed the Lone Ranger`s box office was having Johnny Depp playing Tonto. It wasn`t that Depp played a bad Tonto, but the perception that Tonto wasn`t being played by a Native American Indian that kept the audience away in droves. :o

I guarantee if a Native American played Tonto we would be talking about a Lone Ranger 2 now.

Picking Depp who is a big star to play Tonto backfired.

With John Carter a simple thing might have been to add Warlord of Mars to the title.

Most people I know never heard of John Carter amazingly.

My point of all this is a good buzz must be started early, then maintained.

So I see terrible marketing and planning for Dredd,Lone Ranger and John Carter is what did them in at the box office.

IMO, the problem with the first one is that the character was already burned by the Stallone movie in the US. The general public just thought, "why would anyone want to see a sequel to that POS 90s Stallone garbage?" and didn't even give it a chance.

Unfortunately, most Americans aren't familiar with Dredd as a comic book character so he doesn't get the benefit of infinite reboots like the Marvel and DC properties.

Fan Petition To Bring DREDD Back As A TV Series

The long-running petition to bring back Dredd has morphed somewhat, and instead of focusing primariliy on a sequel, it now seems mostly directed at a TV follow-up.

They've still got the backing of 2000 AD and they've still got more than 125,000 signatures from previous pushes...but what they also have is a slightly new appeal.

"With the success of series such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and The Man in the High Castle, the clamour of the growing fanbase for more from the incredible world of the 2012 DREDD movie cannot be ignored," the petition says. "We call on TV and movie producers to step up to the plate and give us more, either through a pay-to-view TV series or a new movie!"

Karl Urban Wants To Do A Dredd Series For Netflix Or Amazon Prime

More recently, fans have changed course and now are petitioning for a Dredd television series. One talented fan even did a mock of what Dredd would like on the popular streaming service, Netflix. The image made its way to Urban, and he retweeted it and responded with an enticing message.

HOLY!!

Karl Urban on a Dredd Series: "Conversations are Happening"

The Star Trek franchise star, appearing at the Calgary Expo this weekend, was asked about his recent tweet, in which he pushed streaming services like Amazon and Netflix to consider a miniseries follow-up to the 3D film, which was beloved by audiences but lost money in theaters.

"Conversations are happening" about such a series, Urban said, according to people in the audience.

That's certainly exciting, but don't get too enthusiastic just yet: Urban has used the "conversations are happening" intermittently since at least 2014 when quizzed about the possibility of a second Dredd movie.

Karl Urban Reportedly Confirms Dredd 2 Is In Development

Denver Comic Con was going on recently, and Kal Urban of Dredd and Star Trek fame attended the event to greet fans of the comic book and science fiction genres, among others. Speaking of Dredd, the 2012 film was met with praise regardless of the low box office ($35,626,525 million worldwide versus its $50 million budget) that it has been difficult to get Dredd 2 off the ground, as either a film or even a Netflix series.

But at Denver Comic Con, Urban dropped the news on Dredd 2 is in development. He even added: "Dredd represented a failure in marketing. I saw the tracking of that film weeks before it came out and the fundamental problem was no one knew it was being released. Once it came out on DVD and it sold 750,000 copies in the first week alone in North America, it was very clear that the audience had discovered it."
