I lost count but that seems more than 10. Did we change the criteria again?

My top 10 important books:

X-Men 1 (This started is all)

Hulk 181 (1st appearance of probably the most popular X-character for the utter purist 180)

X-Men GS1 (new team)

X-Men 94 (new team re-launched in series)

X-Men 101 (the Phoenix lives)

X-Men 141 (beginning of Days of Future Past)

X-Men 129 (beginning of the Dark Phoenix story arc maybe should be 137)

X-Men (vol. 2) 1 (re-launched the X-Men)

X-Men (vol. 2) 25 (just an awesome book and story arc)

X-Men (vol. 2) 50 (Onslaught begins)

I'd have to put X-Men 137 in there for sure. X-Men 50 just because it was the 1st issue with the Steranko designed logo that they used for the next 40 years

I really feel X-Men 50 and Avengers 96 are kind of undervalued considering both being the debut of the definitive logos for both books.

X-Men 129 (beginning of the Dark Phoenix story arc maybe should be 137)

Actually, X-Men 125 is the official start of the Dark Phoenix saga.

I believe 125 is the return of the Phoenix, but 129 is the official start of the Dark Phoenix story arc (126-128 is the Mutant X story)

Have you read this book? And you read X-Men 126-128 and never saw any Dark Phoenix evolutionary sequences?

Along with being the start of the Dark Phoenix saga, X-Men 125 is also the first time we find out (if you're paying attention) that Magneto is Wanda and Pietro's father.

Okay, so I am assuming you are mocking my statement that the Dark Phoenix Saga started in X-Men 125, or just being Modern fanboy supporting the latest Magneto retcon... Either way...

X-Men 125 starts off with Phoenix's powers being tested on Muir Island, and by Moira MacTaggert, who finds the results quite scary. At the bottom of the first page is this ominous quote:

"And For Her, And For Those She Loves And Love Her -- And Perhaps For The Entire World -- Nothing Will Ever Be The Same Again."

Next we get a 2-page History of Phoenix since X-Men 101, to get us to appreciate the quantum leap in power she experienced, along with a nice shot of Mastermind disguised as the old man on the plane.

Now we firmly move into Dark Phoenix territory, with the first full Jason Wyngarde/Mastermind reveal, as well as a clear history and outline of how he intends to manipulate Jean and turn her into the Black Queen. These two pages are clearly the beginning of the saga, and you would miss the entire genesis of his plot if you skipped them.

Finally, we start to see Jean acting a bit out-of-character (due to Mastermind's influence), flaunting her powers. The second page shows Jean's first time-slip, a plot device that continued through to X-men 134 as a way for Mastermind to exert control over Phoenix.
