Dunno about that, scanning slabbed books always left me with awfully lousy images.

 

Scanners are great for raw books, not so great for slabbed books, IME.

 

Or is there a way to scan books so they do NOT look like balls?

 

I would say that the OP should at least place his slabs on top of a table/shelf, use a red velvet-esque backdrop cloth....work on better angles i.e. watch out for reflective image glares of his face in he shot
