I've finished uploading my cover scans for Dennis the Menace and His Friends Series to the GCD (painful with the site down much of last week). Here's the gallery of them:

I'm trying to figure out the publisher history of the Dennis comics for the GCD, and have looked at the four main titles during the Hallden/Fawcett/CBS era to try to get consistent logic behind them.

 

I did an analysis of the logos and indicias of those titles, and came up with this:

 

ANALYSIS SUMMARY: The current publisher list as listed in GCD [which lists some titles as Fawcett, some as Hallden, and some as Hallden; Fawcett] makes little sense, as all these series except Ruff and the TV Specials cross strict publisher lines, as defined in the indicia. There is even overlap between the logos and the indicias within a series, with "conflicting" info. Going just by cover logos, most books started as Hallden, then went to Hallden/Fawcett, then Fawcett, and then NOTHING. Going by indicias, they started as Hallden, then Hallden Division of Fawcett, then Fawcett only, then BACK to Hallden Division of Fawcett, then finally Hallden Unit of CBS. Messy, to say the least.

 

SPECULATION (I could be wrong about any and all of this): Hallden probably was a small publisher when it picked up the Dennis the Menace license from Pines in late 1958. It was likely bought out/merged with Fawcett Publications in late 1959 or early 1960, and apparently became a "division" of them. I do find it odd that all mention of Hallden disappears for a while in the mid sixties, but then it reappears around 1969. Then in late 1977, CBS must have acquired at least the Hallden Division (if not all?) of Fawcett, and made them a "unit" of CBS. But throughout this time, the company seemed to be located in Connecticut (mostly at 1 Fawcett Place, even after becoming part of CBS), so I think the Hallden people were doing the work under all the umbrellas.

 

Does anyone know the history of Hallden Publications, Inc.? Is any of my speculation true? What should I recommend to the GCD to list as publisher for these titles? Currently I'm thinking "Hallden; Fawcett" for all of them, or maybe "Hallden; Fawcett; CBS Consumer Publishing", but not trying to split up runs of the book across those two or three publishers (like they did for Standard and Pines, not to mention Marvel).

This is speculation on my part, but I always thought "Hallden" was a shell company created specifically to publish Dennis the Menace comics.

 

The Dennis newspaper strip was syndicated by the Post-Hall Syndicate. The name "Hallden" simply seems like the last part of the syndicate combined with the first part of Dennis.

 

This type of arrangment would allow Hank Ketcham and the syndicate to share in the profits from the comic. My understanding was that Fawcett was the actual printer/publisher of the comic from the time it moved from Ned Pines Standard/Pine Comics until it ceased its original run. That would also explain why the indicia were inconsistent. It realy didn't matter that much. Fawcett did the actual printing/publishing and "Hallden" got their royalties.

 

As far as I know, the Hallden name never appeared on any other comics outside the Dennis the Menace family.

 

As to the mention of CBS, I'm a little stumped. Maybe CBS acquired the merchandising rights to Dennis at some point in the late 70's. Jo Rowling has a similar deal right now with Warner Brothers. Warners technically owns the Harry Potter characters and controls all the merchandising.

Thanks, Billy. That makes sense. I passed my info with your comments on to the GCD internal boards. It's being discussed more there. One comment I want to pass on from there is this, by Steven Rowe:

Heres what happen - some of the below is factual, some is speculative.

 

The Dennis comics were always packaged by Dennis the Menace Enterprises (in California); when the Dennis comics were selling above a million copies, DTME opted to avoid the middle man, Ned Pines, and with the clout of moneyman and synidcate head Robert Hall - began self-publishing. I'm not sure if Fawcett was the first distributor or

not -- -- at some point (and I guess Ray would know which came first), Fawcett begain publishing the Dennis paperbacks - and then took over the grunt work on the comic books.

 

of course, like most packaged comics, Fawcett (and if we insist of calling Hallden a division of Fawcett, then Hallden) never saw the material untill it was ready to be printed.

 

oddly enough Pines was bought by CBS around 1972 as well, so Hallden and Pines were back together in a corporate sense!"

In reponse to Steven's comments, Ray came back with this list of Dennis paperback publishers:

 

"Avon did the first Dennis pb in 1952

 

Pocket picked up August 1956 (last month for Avon too)

 

Fawcett picked it up under its Crest imprint on June 1959 (last Pocket known printing was August 1961)

 

Fawcett began to move Dennis to its Gold Medal imprint starting June 1968 (last known Crest July 1970)

 

First known CBS owned Fawcett Dennis book August 1977 (last original Fawcett owners--August 1975 (most pbs during this time period were not dated, so there were later ones, since CBS took over the Fawcett lines in 1976, but August 1975 is the latest dated one))

 

First Ballantine owned Fawcett Dennis book dated September 1982. Last known Dennis CBS printing--February 1982.

 

Last known dated Ballantine Dennis book October 1987, though printings probably run into 1992."

Apparently, at least one other book was published by Hallden. Another poster mentions this book:

 

Mark Trail On Safari #5 is Hallden, 10c cover, dated Summer 1959. Has Hallden logo, with Dennis, plus small "F" underneath.

 

This is not in the GCD. The poster mentions that two other issues with different titles were published by Pines.

As I recall, my father was not too pleased when DTM publishing began to change hands.

After Bob Hall, each publishing change brought a deduction in the price paid to the artist.

By the mid 60's, my father felt he could not come to terms with the pay cuts.

It was at this point that Al began cutting up his collection of original DTM pages.

Not to destroy them, but to cut and paste to save him time in the last few DTM books he did.

Hi my name is Ray Bottorff Jr and I am one of the honchos over at the GCD and I was given notice of this wonderful Dennis the Menace thread.

 

I did read the GCD portion of this discussion in August and I want to answer some misconceptions about the group.

 

1) We are not a closed group. Hundreds of people have indexed for us over the years. Instructions on how to join are on the web site.

 

2) comics are reserved to be indexed to avoid chaos. It prevents people doing work on titles others are working on. It prevents the same book from being indexed more than once. It allows indexers time to complete their indexers.

 

In the case of Dennis the Menace, most titles are reserved by one indexer who apprantly maybe a part of this list and who has the complete run of the comics. He has indexed a lot of issues already and I am reluncant to remove his reservation unless he decides he no longer wants to index those books. Those reservations on non-indexed books will be removed if after 6 months he decided not to continue his reservation. Also, nothing is preventing anyone here from contacting us to see if they can index those books instead. We can always ask the indexer if he/she wants to relent their hold on the book.

Apparently, at least one other book was published by Hallden. Another poster mentions this book:

 

Mark Trail On Safari #5 is Hallden, 10c cover, dated Summer 1959. Has Hallden logo, with Dennis, plus small "F" underneath.

 

This would argue strongly in favor of Hallden being a self-publishing company set up by Post-Hall & Hank Kethchum. "Mark Trail" was another Post -Hall strip. You also remember the Mark Trail "feature" in "Dennis the Menace Goes to Camp?"

 

Maybe they wanted to see if they could market other Post-Hall strips, although Mark Trail seems like a poor choice. Most kids I knew back then would never read that strip.

 

Sounds like the same situation Western Publishing had with Dell comics in the 50's and early 60's. Western actually packaged the books even though Dell was listed as the publisher.

 

My guess is that Fawcett handled the distribution once DTM left Pines as Post-Hall was not set up to distribute comic books.

 

Jim - as always - appreciate you sharing any insights your father had. BTW Al does get a mention in the first volume of "The Complete Dennis the Menace." I'm hoping they give us more information on him in future volumes.

Wow! Welcome to the boards, Ray! Great research on the Dennis paperbacks. It's nice to come back to the forum this weekend after a long break and see the thread alive and kicking with a lot of the usual suspects and a new one as well. I actually did publish a list earlier in the thread about the paperbacks I indexed. In it, I listed the date of the first printing only but have not tracked all the editions or their prices or their ISBN numbers as you have. Very impressive! The reason I didn't do that is that I have not found any differences among the printings -- with a few notable exceptions: The Baby-Sitter's Guide; the differences between the hardback and paperback versions; and the differences between the Pocket Book editions and the later publishers.

 

It's amazing to think that these Dennis books sold over 50 million total copies over the course of years.

 

I will print my index of these books - with notes and in chronological publishing order - again as follows:

 

Dennis the Menace Paperbacks

* As far as I can tell, there are a total of 49 Dennis books. This is a list for cartoon books that reprint the daily strip, NOT the storybooks, the Character Imprints gift books, LGBooks, coloring books, prayer books, cook book, movie novel, riddle book, game or activity books, Original & Best of & other reprint collections, etc.

* It seems the general rule for the paperbacks is that they each include 124 cartoons as opposed to the hardbacks, which each have 62. An exception to the paperbacks is More Dennis (1954), which has 121, so the first paperback may vary also. I only counted cartoons in the first 12 paperbacks, so the count may be different for later books.

* Baby-Sitter’s Guide was revised in the 1960s in paperback form, so it may differ also, and since it is a mix of text and cartoons, it does not include 62 cartoons

* I have tried to list books chronologically based on the original copyright date in the front of the book, not the edition I have. The paperback copyrights tend to be later than the hardbacks of the same title. In cases where two books have the

same copyright year and no month listed, I looked in the back to see a list of

other available titles. If another title appears in one and not the other, the one

with the other title would appear to be the later publication. For examples, see

1970 or 1978.

Below is a quote from earlier concerning the Character Imprints, one of which (Hopes That You Get Well) is listed in your index with a question mark next to it. I will try to scan the three from CI that haven't been scanned yet (I have them all), and I'm sure 313 would like to see them. In addition, I didn't see some titles that I have listed, such as Super-Charged and Ever Ready (1983) and Five Years at the Same Location (1987) on your list. These books exist and I have them in my possession, and I will say that these two titles seem to be the ones that turn up the least. This is great to combine our lists like this to get closer to a final list. What I find interesting about viewing your list is that it shows how many printings each book had and illuminates the fact that the later books are the hardest to find since they had far fewer printings, and in many cases, only one. The Happy Halloween book you have listed is something I am not at all familiar with. Just when I thought I had them all! Anyone have a scan of this??? I will check the Pocket Full of Fun digests to be sure it was not accidentally listed with the cartoon reprints, which is what I suspect may have happened. I would be quite astonished if a Dennis book has existed all these years without my knowledge. An amazing rarity I also don't see mentioned is The Very Best of Dennis the Menace from the 1950s. I will provide more info on that later.

Agreed, JRW! It is the completionist in me that is posting these rarities. Sales figures clearly will bear out that these books were not nearly as successful as, say, any of the cartoon reprint books. I'm not sure I would say I dislike these so much as to say that these are clearly not the pinnacle of Dennis's career! This kind of cutsey, mawkish approach, along with the Bible Kids series and the 1980s cartoon, really ushered in a change in Dennis that seemed to remove the "menace" aspect of his character to a very large extent. It's sort of like he was being presented as the All-American Boy or something. I actually largely prefer the newer cartoons, such as we posted earlier, that have appeared over the last several months by Ron Ferdinand and Marcus Hamilton over this late 1970s period.

 

I would say there are several periods, or epochs, in the Dennis mythology. (I know I'm sounding very pretentious, but bear with me.)

1. The early period where Dennis really was a menace and not necessarily geared toward kids.

2. The period where your dad Al came in and matured the art as the stories themselves shifted toward a decidely younger audience. This is my favorite period.

3. The tv years. I think everyone knows what I'm talking about. The even less menacing Dennis.

4. The post-Wiseman Dennis where it just wasn't the same with so many different artists giving it a try. The comics really drifted during this period.

5. The cutesy period I just mentioned.

6. The modern era, where Marcus Hamilton and Ron Ferdinand have taken over and restored consistency and a mix of the All-American Dennis with the menacing one, as we have seen.

 

All epochs have their highlights and defining moments, and we all have our opinions, but I'll admit I enjoy each in its own way, with the fifth period the only one I don't have a lot of interest in except in how it relates to the more interesting periods.
