Staple question

This Tales from the Crypt has three staples. Looking at the cover you'll see the bottom staple. Where you would expect to see the top staple there is only one staple hole which goes thru to the center fold, no second staple hole looking at the centerfold. Now on the edge of the spine there are two more staples. Now at first I thought [#@$%!!!] someone added the two staples. But the more I look at them they don't look like they were added, but I maybe slipping into restoration denial. Could three staples be original?
