I hate to (potentially) part with this because it truly is one of the most unique and historical pieces I own, but with the holidays coming money is always a bit tighter than usual. I simply hope one of you fellow boardies can offer it a good home.

 

Available here is Dave Berg's sketchbook from 1940. Berg, of course, would go on to produce "The Lighter Side of..." pieces for Mad Magazine after serving in the military, and this 5" x 7" sketchbook is an amazing time capsule that is predominantly filled with character study sketches but also has several diary-style entries that provide a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a young man entering the terrifying unknown of the second World War. Berg used this sketchbook as his enlistment began and numerous anecdotes to that effect are included, as well as several more personal exchanges with women.

 

The book itself is complete with its pages securely attached, and probably grades in the VG-F range. Most pages have different character sketches done in pencil, though other media are found throughout the book including ink, lipstick (!) in a kiss left by one of Berg's girlfriends... As mentioned, this is a one-of-a-kind collection showcasing the very human side of the artist who would emerge from the soldier.
