Byrne AF on eBay: Outlier or new normal?

38 posts in this topic

I wouldn't read much into it. It's just one result and an atypical one given wendigo

I think Byrne's stuff is moving up, Alpha Flight was actually a good series for him, and there hasn't been a ton come to market for quite a while.

Byrne stuff has been moving up for sometime, it's getting more and more expensive to purchase anything.

Buying John Byrne artwork is indeed both driven by era and character.

Here's my opinion on the rough valuation as far as average pages, not splashes or covers:

1970's early work for Charleton - His style hadn't been honed yet early works (much like Todd McFarlane's Infinity Inc for DC) are still popular because it is still artwork by a popular artist in name more than style, so these can command varied prices in the $300-500 range.

Late 70's to early 80's work for Marvel - The pinnacle of his work on Uncanny X-Men, but also including Marvel Team-Up, Avengers, Captain America, Fantastic Four and other random titles. Most pages are $5,000+ and any decent X-Men page is at least $10,000.

Early 80's to late 80's work for Marvel - Great work on Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight and other titles. Mainly stuff he wrote, penciled and inked, so the style evolved a bit. Most pages average around $2,000-5,000.

1980's work for DC Comics - Less popular work yet still quality rendering, most pages should average in the $1,000-2,000 range I think.

1990's to present work for Marvel, DC, IDW and Dark Horse - Good work, but a shadow of his former self in terms of rendering quality to many, maybe an evolution or product of age. I'd say most average pages sell for the $100-300 range. His work on X-Men the Hidden Years and Spider-Man Chapter One excepted, which tend to have premiums, in the $200-500 range.

Not a bad summary. You have a strong grasp on this market. As a Byrne collector, I can validate much of your pricing summary. More importantly, you can actually write the dates as such:

1973-1976: pre-Marvel for Charlton and any others,

1976-1981: THE PRIME PERIOD for most collectors from his Marvel work on the titles that you wrote. FF (pre 232), Champions, Iron Fist, and the one shots (like GR 20, DD 138, ASM 189-190, ASM 206, PM 48-49, PMIF 50, and IH Annual 7) are quickly moving into the $3,000 to $5,000 range (or more depending on content),

1982-1985: The next most collected Marvel period with the titles that you mentioned,

1985-1988: The DC period - pages here are on the move north,

1988-1992: The return to Marvel with a long run on West Coast Avengers and Namor Sub-Mariner. Pages here are moving north as well, and

1992-Present: Concur with your assessment. The X-Men Hidden Years in the late 1990s renewed much interest with someone actually tackling this gap in X-Men history. Tom Palmer inking John's work was also very pleasing to see this team work together. Unfortunately, the documented disagreements here between Marvel and Byrne ended what could have been another lengthy run.

PM me when you have a chance. I would like to exchange more thoughts.

Ciao!

My observation is there are a lot of Byrne collectors out there and all of his stuff sells. I was what I would call a Byrne on a budget collector. Here are a few sub $100 dollar pages I picked up many years ago. Not sue what they would sell for today.

I doubt I will ever be able to buy a Byrne FF page, but not too long ago you could get Hidden Years pieces "reasonable". This one lingered on eBay for a while before I finally decided to pull the trigger.

I think the majority of fans of John Byrne are from the 1980's, his early work, more so than fans he's garnered in his later work, post-Y2K.

So, as many fans who may have seen his Original Art sell for hundreds back in the days, now see unattainable price tags in the thousands, most collectors can only afford to get his newer stuff deemed inferior yet is still a souvenir of sort and allows the fan to have something by their favorite artist.

I think I'm in that category in that I've seen lots of pages in the $100-150 range as well as up to $500, but am hard pressed to find the right page and willing to pay the $5k+, so have been content with what I've found, what I find and what I have 'til maybe one day these lower end pages increase at a higher rate than the well established pages and I can trade up.

I've seen similar instances with Todd McFarlane's work, but opposite in that his early work, specifically Infinity Inc used to go for about $100 a page and is now in the $300-500+ per page range because many fans can't afford the $5,000+ price tag of a Spider-Man page yet wants to own some original art by the artist.

I do see lots of upside for the less popular Byrne art and he may parallel Neal Adams, Frank Miller, Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby where any rendering of any character has some interest and value. I feel the same about the under appreciated artists like Infantino, Kane, Colan, and Perez who you can still find pages in the $100 range (albeit maybe later work on lackluster characters) that have good prospects of increasing in value based on namesake alone.

This one is pure winner and Byrne's execution stand heads and shoulders above most of his other work of the last twenty-five years. Watched it myself for a while on eBay, and regret not making it happen...before you did :)

After missing out on the Golden Age Flash splash by Byrne that bump around for quite a while, I decided to not take a chance on this one.

If you guys don't mind me picking your brain a bit I've been meaning to pick up a nice reasonable She-Hulk page from the 90's series. Any idea what a nice action page should go for ??

I've checked Heritage results, but it seems to be a limited sample on panel pages, and the pricing seems to be all over the board. Is there any consensus as to price range ??

I think the She-Hulk page needs an image furnished for a closer to accurate speculative estimation on value... I know you don't own one, but maybe take a photo of the colored published page you're looking for/at and input can be given on valuation.
