Last year I spent quite a bit on comics and art. I don't know the exact total, but it was probably in between $4000-5000. I more than doubled the amount of original art that I own, so a majority of my money went towards that.

This year I'd like to cut back my spending to about 75% of that.

You spend $1000 a year yet you are looking for the

Green Lantern 76

Silver&Mostly Bronze Spidey's

Namor, Sub-Mariner 1

Hulk 181,180,182

Daredevil 168

Daredevil 156

Early Avengers

MOST SILVER OR BRONZE AGE STUFF

No offense but are you expecting to find those in a $1 BIN ? foreheadslap.gif

The last two years I went way over board with my spending, probably averaging $12k to 15K. This year , I am going to scale way back and save for one or two early X-Men issues.

I think I might spend 10% of my net this year is that too much? confused-smiley-013.gif

Bob, the only person who can answer that question is you. Here is how I look at things and not suprisingly how other on here feel as well.

1- Take care of things like house payments, home equities, and other stuff first

2- Take and place money into things like Roth's, 401k's, savings, mutuals, and others. This will be the basis of your money after you stop working and is the single most important thing you can do to prepare yourself for retirement. DO not expect comics to do it for you.

3- Spend money on your family, if you have one, and make sure you put away money for things like vacations, incidentals, and such

4- Then, after you have done the above, spend what you feel comfortable with on comics. Maybe set yourself up a budget and stick to it. If you get to where you think you are spending too much on comics, then you probably are. Also, sometimes back away for a little while to reasses your collecting direction. Are you focusing on something in particular, or are you just buying everything in sight. Focusing on one or two titles (Avengers and Thor) has helped me focus, thus making the buying of the comics more rewarding. I also know that I cant go and buy just any and everything because it would keep me from working on my other runs.

that is kinda the way I look at it.

Take it for what it is worth,

Arex

I spend roughly $30-40 each week at the local shop. And probably an average of about $50-100 each month on ebay purchases and back issues from the shop. Not a whole lot in a year, but that's all I can afford. As a grad student, I'm only making $16 per year sorry.gif

I'm trying to shove my comic buys thru on my kids education expenses.

Think it might work???

I spend about $500 a month on comics, which is nearly all of my "fun-money"...

my fun-money is there to be spent, I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't go to bars or clubs anymore, I don't go to the movies, I have no car, no debts or loans to pay, no alimony or child support, no pets... nothing just comics

The rest of my paycheck goes towards my household, the kids, bills, savings, gifts and charity etc...

Of course it hurts sometimes that 36% of what I make go to taxes, but it's a nice trade-off for free transport, health care and social security.

And I get to retire when I'm 57...

Sounds good - I'm moving to Belgium........

Sorry to be a downer, Chrom, but the writing's on the wall - you Europeans are going to be working more hours, getting fewer services, retiring later and taking a lot less vacation in the coming decades. There's just no other way you guys are going to be able to compete against Asia or support your aging populations otherwise.

But at least you'll still have good food, topless beaches, real football and imported American comics. tongue.gif

You are right Gene, but I'm pretty confident. I'm still in the age bracket that will get all the benefits, money won't become tight for another 15-20 years.

The 20-30 years old will definitively have to look out for themselves more.

The MAJOR cutback in my area of work was that the retirement age was upped from 54 to 57....and that caused so much social unrest you wouldn't believe it.

Anyway, I'm not even thinking of retiring at 57...what would I do all day

Belgium (Flanders) won't be hit that bad compared to our neighbors in Holland, Germany and France, mainly because our taxation has been a lot higher for the past 100 years and we are currently the 2nd or 3rd most prosperous part of the world....but eventually the walls will come tumbling down. I'd better teach my kids how to save thumbsup2.gif
