How one seller is trying to game eBay

15 posts in this topic

First, he puts a desirable book up for auction, starting bid $15, with a huge hidden reserve that doesn't get met;

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fantastic-Fears-No-5-Comic-Book-/121879374956?hash=item1c6093ac6c%3Ag%3AwQUAAOSwuYVWoXal&nma=true&si=0Z2i579EZDVpJ2AKzvs95RkZ5Aw%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Then he re-posts the same book, with the starting bid at what the high bid ended at in the reserve auction;

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fantastic-Fears-No-5-Comic-Book-/121886585844?hash=item1c6101b3f4:g:wQUAAOSwuYVWoXal

Just doesn't seem cricket to me, but then maybe I'm as old-fashioned as my kids tell me I am, eh eh.

As one that makes a living selling printer parts on the internet, I find it to be creative marketing that if works, many will follow. Sort of like how ending auctions on a Sunday night 11:00 eastern had become the defacto time to end comic book auctions.

On the other hand, ultimately it take two bidders to determine the true market value of a comic book.

thanks for posting the listings.

It's been awhile since I posted on eBay, but what's the catch here?

Is he saving on final value fees with the second straight auction vs. if it had hit the super high reserve?

This may be distasteful but also nothing more than price discovery.

Frankly, I prefer it to the literally 90% of comic listings that simply sit at ridiculously high reserves rather than realistic / true auctions.

I concur. At least the book is more likely to sell than be relisted countless times.

Well that was certainly stated with finality, eh eh! Why would you have bid that amount in the first auction, but are not willing to do it now?

Inquiring minds...:wink:
