Bosco685 Posted March 10, 2016 Share Posted March 10, 2016 Netflix lands BRIGHT with Will Smith & David Ayer The film, described as END OF WATCH meets ALIEN NATION, would take place in a supernatural and magical world where orcs and fairies live side-by-side with mankind. Smith would play a human cop who has to team with Joel Edgarton as an orc to find a powerful wand that creatures are being killed to secure. The project had been shopped around Hollywood with several other studios expressing interest. However, a $80-100 million budget and a production commitment had to be part of the deal and only Netflix stepped up to accept those terms and outbid their competitors. BRIGHT, the Max Landis spec -script that Smith and director David Ayer recently came aboard, is in the process of being bought by Netflix, easily surpassing their deal with Adam Sandler to mark the company's biggest production yet. Bosco685 Posted March 19, 2016 Author Share Posted March 19, 2016 Netflix Makes Mammoth Deal for David Ayer’s ‘Bright’ Starring Will Smith Deadline is now reporting that Netflix has indeed won and that the cost was huge for the streaming giant. Netflix has reportedly paid $90 million for the David Ayer film, which is about a human cop (will Smith) who is forced to work with an orc (Joel Edgerton) in order to find a powerful wand for which others would kill to obtain. The project is being described as a midway point between David Ayer’s End of Watch and 1988’s Alien Nation. According to Deadline, $3 million alone goes to screenwriter Max Landis (American Ultra), which is one of the largest spec deals for a writer in years. “The film will cost around $45M to shoot, meaning that just about that much will be invested in talent fees, and also to buy out their back ends,” reports Deadline. As for how the film will be distributed, “there could be a limited theatrical launch day and date, Netflix is doing this to serve subscribers to its streaming service in countries around the world and so there will be no backend residuals.” Netflix has made a production commitment to the film (obviously; they also think it has franchise postential), and plans to shoot this fall. It will be interesting to see if this gamble pays off for Netflix or if their streaming model helps to mitigate the risk. Set in an alternate present-day, BRIGHT follows two cops from very different backgrounds. Ward, a human (Will Smith), and Jakoby, an orc (Joel Edgerton), as they embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Noomi Rapace, who plays the villain, recently spoke with IndieWire about BRIGHT, and praised the Netflix film as a "completely new universe." "I read the --script and I was like, ‘Oh my days, this is…I don’t…I’ve never seen this, I’ve never dreamt about this.’ I grew up in Iceland with elves, we kind of believe in elves and this is like elves and orcs and lizard people and humans working side by side, living together in LA, in modern LA, downtown LA, career town. You can really feel David’s [other films] ‘Harsh Times,’ ‘Training Day,’ and ‘End of Watch,’ that kind of rawness and real authentic feeling. It’s not magical kind of fantastic sci-fi. It’s very real, it just happens to be orcs and elves and creatures that are not from our world. I think it can be a complete new wave." Noomi Rapace added that BRIGHT is "very intense" and will feature "a lot of fight scenes." BRIGHT will debut on Netflix on December 22, 2017. Netflix Has Already Ordered 'Bright' Sequel, Will Smith Returning Quote Netflix is certainly doubling down on its biggest original movie project to-date. On Friday, December 22, David Ayer's Bright will be released on the global streaming service, forgoing any money it would make at the box office. According to a report from Bloomberg, Netflix has already given an order to the film's sequel, and star Will Smith is signed on to return. The report states that Bright is Netflix's attempt to target big studios and movie theater chains, letting them know that streaming is part of the future of film. Bright has been called 'the worst movie of 2017' Not all the reviews are bad. But there are quite a few harsh ones out there collected under the article.
