KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS (8/19/16)

Saw this movie yesterday with my family. Masterfully told story with so much eye candy, you will be pleasantly surprised. It has so many influences - fables, the paranormal, spiritual, magic. What is even more impressive is this is all done with stop-motion production. From LAIKA Entertainment, which was the studio that created Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls.

Well worth the time!

FORBES.COM Review: 'Kubo And The Two Strings' Is A Mesmerizing, Emotional Animated Film

Kubo is a gorgeously realized artistic achievement. It is easy to forget you’re not watching computer animation, but rather intricate stop-motion effects. In those moments when an image or sequence particularly dazzled me ,it was shocking when I would suddenly remember this is all the work of delicate hands, one frame at a time.

Beneath the family-friendly nature of the story — and rest assured, despite a few scarier moments plus familial sadness and loss not uncommon in a typical Disney children’s film, this is a film the whole family will love — is a serious, often downright somber presentation of a young boy’s isolation and intense desire to connect with his parents even at the possible cost of his own life.

When you see Kubo and the Two Strings, be sure not to accept some small screen with a dimmed projector: seek out a screening that will let you fully appreciate the rich colors and little details that make this film such a visual feast to enhance the emotional impact. There are so many gloriously realized settings — at sea, in the mountains, in valleys, in the snow, in the pitch black of night and the bright light of day, even deep under water amid grit and gloom — you deserve to see them the way they’re meant to be experienced.

Perhaps no genre or style of filmmaking today has the richness and variation found in animation, and Kubo and the Two Strings is a perfect testament to that fact. It is mesmerizing, haunting, amusing, and beautiful entertainment, emotionally powerful and unlike any other animated film you’ve seen before.
