If you look at the cross section or edges of the book you'll see some inconsistencies or roughness.  These are from the manufacturing process and are more noticeable on particular issues.  Search eBay for ASM #57 (Ka-zar) and up by the CCA box (most of the time) you'll see a rough cut that looks like chipping.  A book that's been trimmed would have edges that align and form a smooth wall.
