Spawn Creator Todd McFarlane Takes Photo With Original Spawn Actor At Comic-Con

McFarlane caught up with Michael Jai White, the star of the 1997 Spawn movie, at Comic-Con International: San Diego.

The Spawn movie told the origin story of Al Simmons and how he became Spawn. The film was notable for heavy blood and gore but was panned by critics. Produced by New Line Cinema with a $40 million budget, the film earned $87 million at the box office. The Spawn movie is notable for being the first major comic book superhero movie to feature an African American in the lead role. A sequel to Spawn was planned but never made.

At Comic-Con International: San Diego, McFarlane announced that a reboot movie written, produced, and directed by himself had found a home at Blumhouse Productionss McFarlane says the new Spawn movie will be quite different than the average superhero movie made today, eschewing the popular PG-13 rating for a hard R and leaving "ray guns" and "cars" and "arch villains" out.

“It’s just going to be this dark, gritty world, and there’s going to be one thing in the entire world that is fantastic and it’s going to be Spawn,” McFarlane told ComicBook.com at Comic-Con. “I’d call it a dark supernatural thriller.”

Spawn Reboot is a ‘Low-Budget’ Superhero Movie

Quote

The Spawn reboot will be a “low-budget” superhero movie, according to one of its producers. This news follows the announcement that Todd McFarlane – the comic book creator of Spawn – has teamed up with Blumhouse Productions to write and direct a big screen adaptation of his own work. Jason Blum, who’s overseen hit after hit (Paranormal Activity, Split, Get Out) with his Blumhouse company, is onboard as a producer on the project.

McFarlane has mentioned before that his CIA-agent-turned-vengeful-demonic-antihero creation is “not the biggest role” in the Spawn reboot. He compared the film to Jaws, explaining that the cop character Twitch is Spawn’s equivalent of Sheriff Brody, who had a lot of screen-time in Steven Spielberg’s iconic shark flick because the action scenes were so expensive to shoot. The shark itself, in McFarlane’s words, “showed up at the opportune time to make the movie worthwhile” – and it sounds like his Spawn reboot will take a similar approach to its own expensive-to-showcase central character.

Sounds like a Spawn origin movie, which primarily takes place before Al Simmons becomes Spawn.  Maybe he'll be human until the last scene when he becomes Spawn, screams "Noooooo!" and takes two steps forward like Frankenstein's Monster right before the final credits. :ohnoez:

How The Spawn Reboot Will Pull Off A Low-Budget Superhero Film

In an interview with ComingSoon, producer Jason Blum has revealed just how they plan to bring the comic book character back to the big screen while keeping an eye on their wallets, and it starts with getting back to the core of what makes Spawn so iconic:

“One of the things is we’re keeping the scope of the -script relatively contained, so that’s the biggest way. I think the other way is he and I aren’t paying ourselves any money out of the budget nor will any of the actors, so that’s another way. We’re using our usual tricks!”

This approach is how most Blumhouse productions work, with contained stories often unfolding in a single location, so it makes sense Blum would apply that same logic to the superhero genre. He and McFarlane  have been working together to develop the recently finished -script, presumably to hit these financial parameters. As for what the film emails, so far all we know is that the movie will focus on Spawn and Detective Twitch Williams with the two locked in a Jaws-like storyline.

As you can see above, the -script page in question takes place at the shooting range where two cops, "Danny" and Twitch, are doing some target practice. The scene occurs early on in the film, according to McFarlane.

McFarlane has previously teased that the film will be very conservative in how often (or much) it shows you its monster. Because the detective characters will be carrying the bulk of the weight, casting them is a big looming challenge that fans are eager to hear more about.

I'm getting the "Se7en" vibe...just replace Kevin Spacey with Spawn.

Spawn kill/tortures his victims and the two detectives look into it.

Still haven't made up my mind on how I should feel about this movie¬¬.

Todd McFarlane Says Spawn Reboot Isn’t A Superhero Movie.

https://screenrant.com/todd-mcfarlane-spawn-reboot-superhero/

“We just signed off on the -script, and are going into budgeting. We’re also having our casting meeting…It will be dark and heavy, serious, R-rated. It won’t be a superhero movie. I don’t think most people would categorize it as that. It will be a supernatural thriller, like a lot of good creep movies. The only thing in the movie that’s fantastic is Spawn, and anything else is otherwise normal.”

As for Spawn‘s R-rating, McFarlane doesn’t want people to think that the film will be like Logan or Deadpool, in which they utilize nudity and profanity, but rather use that MPAA rating to showcase “trauma, true trauma, as serious as possible.” Spawn doesn’t yet have a release date, but an early 2018 production start could indicate an early 2019 release.

Spawn Movie Has Begun Casting (EXCLUSIVE)

Quote

Todd McFarlane announced the new Spawn movie last year, and it seems to be rolling along quite smoothly. ComicBook.com's Jim Viscardi had a chance to talk to McFarlane about the project, which just started officially casting.

"We just officially the other day had our first casting meeting, and so what that means for anyone listening today is with the final -script we're going to start sending that into Hollywood to actually go pick up the cast members," McFarlane said.

With a final -script in hand and casting underway, Spawn is marching ever closer to the big screen once again, and McFarlane gave fans a sneak peek behind the scenes.

"So what you do during those first couple of meetings is go through all the characters and then sort of throw some names and bat some names around for people you think might fit it," McFarlane said. "More specifically, are there actors or characters you've seen in other movies that you think fall into that pool, because all of that gives the casting director a picture so that they can go 'oh, okay, I know who to go after now that we're doing it.' So we've officially begun the casting process."

While Spawn is the headliner, he isn't necessarily the biggest role in the film.

"There's two big roles in the -script," McFarlane said. "There's obviously sort of Spawn himself, although in a weird way it's not the biggest role, and then there's the cop. The cop is this character Twitch who's been there since issue #1. Twitch is the role in this one, and I sort of refer to him as my sheriff Brody, who is the sheriff in the Jaws movie. Although it was called Jaws, Jaws didn't really talk a lot inhis movie, right? He just kind of showed up at the opportune time to make the movie worthwhile."

Spawn will be coming from Blumhouse, makers of The Purge, Paranormal Activity, and The Belko Experiment. The budget will be in the $10 million range, and no official release date has been announced.

Todd MacFarlane's SPAWN Reboot Reportedly Looking To Finally Start Production This Spring

Quote

The long-awaited reboot of Todd MacFarlane's Spawn finally seems to be gaining some traction, as the project is expected to begin shooting this spring.

As reported by Omega Underground, the film will start production this May. While not many details are set in stone yet, the movie is said to be shooting in New York, with MacFarlane making his directorial debut. No casting has been confirmed either, but MacFarlane has thrown around big budget names such as Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio.

At last October's New York Comic-Con, McFarlane stated that this new Spawn film will be “dark and R-rated,” yet unlike the other comic book anti-hero movies we’ve seen so far. He furthered his point by adding, “I will have a shark in black water and if you’re swimming he will come and you’ll be gone and he will you up.” His vision of the film will fit nicely with the current track record of Blumhouse, who he partnered up with to produce the movie. Blumhouse has produced some very successful low-budget horror movies such as Get Out, Paranormal Activity and The Purge. The comic book creator has stated he wants to create a low budget horror movie that will appeal to fans of the comic, and that the title role of Spawn will be a non-speaking role. McFarlane previously compared the Spawn reboot to Steven Spielberg’s classic, Jaws, stating the character of Twitch is like Chief Brody and does most of the talking. According to that metaphor, Spawn would then be Jaws, only making appearances when it would have the most impact on the audience.

If McFarlane gets Jamie Foxx for Spawn, that would be very very good. He is a great actor.

But what a bad dude he was in 'Baby Driver'.
