Okay Who's Going to Bag This One?

Avengers 34 Link

As for the top left corner, it is a new part of the slab designed to keep the label from being slipped out. I believe that they started doing it a few months back in response to numerous comments about how easy it would be to swap the labels of two books.

Rhino:

That is one sweet book, but I don't think the seller needed to resort to the following hype in order to stimulate bidding:

"The one and only copy to be graded 9.8 by CGC. UNBELIEVABLE! And it's got the first appearance of the Living Laser too. What more could you ask for?"

What more? How about just about any other Marvel villain?!!

Sometimes sellers will dredge up the weirdest stuff to get bidders excited...

Hi Gary hi.gif

Well, I can't blame him for inserting hype, if I had a bunch of Silver Age 9.8s for sale and if some were the highest graded copies, I'd hype the heck out of 'em.

As for the Living Laser comment, I'm guessing that was a little tongue in cheek. I think anybody looking for fork over the cash for that highest graded Avengers issue knows that Living Laser was a lame villain.

Personally I'm holding out for a 9.8 copy of ASM 81, first appearance of the Kangaroo..... tongue.gif

Hype is what it's all about. 893whatthe.gif

As long as a seller doesn't say something untruthful, I fully expect them to PRESENT the BEST CASE for why someone would want to own this book.

Wonder why he didn't stress the Don Heck art.

I put in my thrill bid, though I suspect this will go bezonkers.I just can't justify paying four figures for an Avengers in the 30s.

I know the seller. He has (or HAD) a fantastic collection of very high grade Silver/Bronze. Looks like he has a lot of it up for sale this week. Nice stuff!

I have recently bough two books from that seller. He really has very nice books. And you know what, they were all raw 3-4 months ago. He is listing them as they come back from CGC. I know I have asked how many HG raw books from this era are still out there yet to be submitted - well, here is one guy that clearly has them. Here is a recent mass mailing from him (I'm sure he won't mind me posting it:)

CGC kicked it into high gear and 3 boxes showed up this week!

I received some really nice stuff, including a few CGC 9.8's! Especially nice is Avengers Vol 1 # 34 in CGC 9.8 - the ONE AND ONLY CGC 9.8 in the world! I also received a handfule of CGC 9.6 FF's, Spider-Man's, X-Men and Avengers!

Wonder why he didn't stress the Don Heck art.

Maybe because he wants the book to sell? poke2.gif

27_laughing.gif Oh c'mon give Don some love. What do you expect he had to follow up Kirby then watch Buscema take the characters to a whole new level, he never had a chance. Heck wasn't my favorite but his art had a flare to it that was unique.

As a Captain America fan, I always felt sorry for the Iron Man fans everytime I read an issue of TOS. We got Kirby, and they got Heck! 27_laughing.gif

I don't love him enough to pay an ultra-premium price for one of his masterworks bearing a 9.8 label, that's for certain. 27_laughing.gif

Nothing wrong with Heck. Plus his art is ALOT more affordable than Kirby's. (not that I can afford either)

Don Heck..... the poor man's Kirby. thumbsup2.gif

Keep in mind....

"In 1971, Don Heck was considered the best renderer of attractive women in comics by Jack Kirby, who suggested him to DC as an artist for 'Batgirl'."

...it's got the first appearance of the Living Laser too. What more could you ask for?"

That was sarcasm, not hype!

Just like this from my listing for Spider-Man 65:

"You are bidding on a copy of Marvel Comics' Amazing Spider-Man 65 from October, 1968 featuring an appearance by Daredevil's Foggy Nelson! No Silver Age Foggy Nelson collection is complete without this one, so don't miss out! Poor Foggy... first he can't even get the time of day from his secretary - and future strung-out porn star - Karen Page, now he's getting no respect from me! This copy is just back from CGC and has been graded Very Fine CGC 8.0!"

See, sarcasm can be fun!
