Doctor Solar (Gold Key) #2 Registry Set

46 posts in this topic

It's taken over 15 years to assemble this collection, and now it's time to see these comics go to new and happy homes.  Doctor Solar was the first original character from Gold Key, and a trend setting Sci-Fi comic at a time in the early Silver Age when the industry published few of them.  Every issue sports an awesome original cover painting, many of which also adorn the back covers but free of obtrusive typesetting.

This is the second finest known set, after Erik/Rosland's spectacular grouping.  There are 27 copies of 25 issues, including some pedigree examples.  All but one are graded near mint or better and the page quality and cover registrations are uniformly outstanding.

The sale particulars: The list prices are firm as the collection is brand new to market, although I would be happy to consider a discount and entertain serious offers for the entire run.  Payments are accepted by check, money order, or PayPal.  Shipping is by USPS Priority and costs $14 in the US for up to 4 comics - other locations will be a bit extra.  There are no returns on these CGC-graded books, unless a slab is damaged despite my bomb-proof packaging.  Disclosure: none of these comics was pressed under my ownership, or to my knowledge beforehand.

Here we go with the biggie.  The rest of the collection will be listed Friday night and Saturday.

Doctor Solar #1

cgc 9.4 ow/w

$4250

First original Gold Key character and superhero comic.  Published in 1962, this book is scarce in high grade and trails only the Pacific Coast copy in 9.6.  The sensational cover painting is by Richard Powers, a renowned painter and book cover artist, and member of the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.  An underappreciated and undervalued gem from the early Silver Age.

Doctor Solar #2

cgc 9.4 white

Top census copy (1 of 3)

$1000

Arguably the coolest sci-fi comic book cover of all, an awesome Richard Powers masterpiece.  This ish is so scarce in high grade, there are no 9.4 sales recorded in GPA.  The last high grade copy to sell was an 8.5 that went for $600.

Doctor Solar #5

cgc 9.0 white

$325  SOLD!

The scarcest Solar of the Silver Age, with just a single copy at the top of the census in 9.2, this is one of two in 9.0.  Same stellar collection as issues 2-4.

Also - damn you for your timing - as the current # 3 registry set holder, I wish it weren't tax season...

If there's anyone out there who doubts how hard a run this is to put together in 9.0, let alone 9.4 -- trust me. It's harder than Magnus, despite having fewer issues by far.

Don't hesitate - you won't see books like this again for at least another few years.
