Leaked Audition Tapes For The CW's SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH Series Revealed

The CW is moving forward with Riverdale spinoff The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and unlike the 90s series on ABC, this version is expected to be quite a bit darker (similar to the character's recent comic book adventures). Well, just days after David Rapport Casting - which has worked on everything from Arrow to Supergirl - announced that they're working on the show, audition tapes have surfaced.

The prospective candidates for the role are Charlie Torr (Rake), Ariel Kaplan (Neighbours), Bekka Walker (The Mindy Project), and newcomer Adelina Hudson.

‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ Series Moves from The CW to Netflix with Two-Season Order

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which was originally being developed at CW as a companion series to their hit teen soap Riverdale, is headed straight-to-series at Netflix with a two-season, 20-episode order.

 

Deadline reports that Netflix swooped in with a deal the Sabrina team couldn’t refuse, a two-season pickup, after Riverdale success on the streaming platform. The CW’s dark and delicious spin on Archie comics has been a hit on Netflix, something that has almost certainly been a factor in Riverdale’s impressive Sophomore season ratings (it’s out-performing the first season by about fifty percent). Additionally, the move to Netflix allows WBTV to maintain full ownership of the Sabrina, unlike the CW series, which are co-produced with CBS TV Studios.

 

A darker spin on the source material than the popular 1990s Sabrina the Teenage Witch series starring Melissa Joan Hart, the new incarnation of Sabrina was described as a mix of The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby that reimagines Sabrina’s origin story as a coming-of-age drama set in the realm of horror and witchcraft and finds Sabrina struggling to reconcile her dual nature as half-witch, half-mortal as evil forces threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit. No release date is set for the series yet.

Now, as pre-production on Netflix's CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA conjures up a bit of progress, showrunner and Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has unveiled the first piece of concept art for the upcoming RIVERDALE spinoff!.

 

As you can see from the above artwork, the show looks as if it will emulate the somber tone and eerie atmosphere found within the show's source material. Provided that the show adhears closely to the books upon which it is based, viewers can expect something quite different from that of RIVERDALE's noir-like presentation.

'Sabrina' Begins Production on its Pilot Episode

Per a tweet from show-runner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, it appears as though Netflix has begun principal photography on their as-yet-untitled Riverdale spinoff based on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.

 

 

The series, which was developed at The CW, will have an initial order of 20 episodes -- two, ten-episode seasons -- at Netflix and is now listed as being an "untitled Sabrina project" based on the graphic novel that gave its name to the initially-announced Chilling Adventures....

 

A press release from Archie at the time named the series simply Sabrina.

 

The -script page, which names the pilot "October Country," confirms previously-reported information that the pilot would be written by Aguirre-Sacasa and directed by Lee Toland Krieger, who helmed both the Riverdale pilot and The CW's upcoming pilot for Life Sentence.

 

"The October Country" is a 1955 short story anthology from acclaimed author Ray Bradbury.

WONDER WOMAN's Lucy Davis Will Portray Aunt Hilda in Netflix’s SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH Series

Deadline reports Lucy Davis (Wonder Woman) has been cast as Hilda Spellman opposite lead Kiernan Shipka for the upcoming adaption of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Hilda is known as being the more nurturing and kinder of Sabrina’s two witch aunts with her sister, Zelda, taking more of an authoritative role in the young witch’s life. Caroline Rhea portrayed the character in the 1996 ABC/WB series opposite Beth Broderick’s Zelda and Melissa Joan Hart’s titular character Sabrina.

 

The upcoming series, based on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, is from Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV and will stream on Netflix. It is set to take a darker turn on the iconic character from the Archie comics series as Deadline describes it as a re-imagining of “the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch (Shipka) as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft.” It is reportedly going to be in the tone of psychological horror classics Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist as the adaptation “finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”

I think this will be a hit. Lot of Harry Potter fans out there and this will fill the magic void a little bit.
