I think what we may be seeing in cases like this, is that a book is getting an extra bump for super glossiness or ink depth, that is, qualities that just don't translate well in scans.

 

This book indeed musta viewed great in hand, and offset the assorted flaws that might have otherwise brought the book down below 9.0

 

Keep in mind being just half a grade off either way is pretty darn close when grading from a scan.

Cases could legitmatly be made by both sides as to why the book shoulda been graded higher or lower a half grade.

 

Of course me personally, I think it should have been LOWER.

And like others have said I was 8.5/9.0 and went with the wrong one... again... for the sixth time.

I thought there was no way in hell this book was a 9.0....

I am doing VERY poorly in this contest, but I think I'm ok with it.

 

Here's why...

 

If you're trying to get points in the game, you need to guess within 2 grades

of the actual CGC grade. So, when I determine a possible grade,

I ask myself if I believe the grade COULD be 2 levels higher...

In Round 9, there was no way that I would have believed that a 9.4 was possible.

In fact, no one even guessed 9.4... so no one believed it was possible.

But, if you guess 9.0, you're acknowledging that someone would deserve a point

if they guessed 9.4 on this book.

 

Since I couldn't make myself believe anyone could possibly deserve a point for guessing 9.4,

there was no way I could guess 9.0.

 

I'm losing in the contest badly, but I'm pretty sure that somehow it still makes sense to me.

Kind of a soft 9.0 with those corners and spine, don't you think, Nikos?

 

I went with 8.0 primarily due to the scuffed and rounded LLFC, and the LRBC appears to have a small impact crease. Plus, there are small front corner creases that break ink on 2 corners.

 

While any one of these defects may have been allowable in a 9.0, I thought the cumulative effect would drag it down to 8.0

 

I guess I was wrong.

 

Ahem, and what about the writing on the back?

I knew I was being a hater with my grade but I just don't think writing should be almost entirely ignored in grading. I think it should be downgraded WAY MORE than CGC did...
