Shelving the animated series MIGHT be due to Hasbro making way for something better.

Around 2010-2015, Hasbro wanted to emulate Marvel and create its own cinematic universe.  Now, to be fair, Hasbro actually had the IP to kind of make it work.

The idea was to connect, GI Joe, Transformers, MASK, Micronauts, and others into an overall narrative.  At first it was to be fleshed out on screen.  The failure of the two GI Joe movies in the theaters put a hold on everything as Transformers was the only property attracting attention and dollars and even that faded until the soft reboot with Bumblebee.

By 2017, the shared universe idea was partially shelved at least on screen but was to take place across other forms of media.  They even offered a SDCC Boxed Set of Toys with representatives from each of these lines that were "part of the story."  You can read the narrative on the side of the box after my wall of text.  Included in the set were:

  1. Transformers Generations – Leader Class Jetfire
  2. G.I. Joe – Roadblock
  3. M.A.S.K. – Matt Trakker
  4. Action Man
  5. Rom The Space Knight
  6. Rom – Dire Wraith
  7. Visionaries – Leoric
  8. Micronauts – Minis – Baron Karza, Betatron, Gammatron, Quin-Tillus, Acroyear, Phenelo-Phi, Xant, Oberon

From what I have seen over the last couple of years, Hasbro might be resurrecting this idea.  At the end of Rise of the Beasts, a representative of what is alluded to be a regular job interview meets with the main human character offering a business card that reads, "GI Joe."   Hasbro later confirmed that a crossover is coming between Transformers and GI Joe.

It seems that certain elements of the storyline from ten years ago are already in play:

  1. Transformers come to Earth
  2. GI Joe is the response to this
  3. MASK technology is developed due to the US Government working with the Autobots
  4. Cobra is developed to exploit
  5. Everyone fights the Decepticons as the real threat
  6. Other factions such as Visionaries and Micronauts come into the fold to take sides.

Micronauts might have been shelved for now because it does not fit the narrative that is being developed.

They were floating it as far back as 2013 and developed the concept for their shared universe leading up to 2017.  It was in 2016 that they secured the rights to their own convention of company toys known as Hascon which was supposed to be an annual or biannual event but turned out to be a one and done type deal to various issues.  (They weren't too creative with the name as you can see.)
