Anyway onto the second issue...

 

 

In which we meet the mush-face...er...Mutants!

All of these early issues have photo sections and interviews from the various Ape movies.

This 3rd issue has a nice dark tense cover scene!

Issue 4 should be subtitled "My summer vacation with Cornelius!"

 

 

Inside were also many ads for all sorts of well...everything Ape related; toys, belt buckles, even the Marvel ads grew hair. This Ad is a hoot! I especially like the Zombie and Morbius Apes!

 

 

*Note: I scanned a lot in tonight and can't remember if this particular ad came from this issue.

Issue 5 reveals "How to become an ape"

Issue 6 was my "real" first issue bought off the rack and got most of the run from the same store.

 

 

The Ploog art got me hooked from this issue, as I look at it again it is even more astounding! Ploog, in this issue and the next uses what seems to be a "charcoal" style as opposed to the pen and ink with washes in the previous issues. Great stuff!

 

 

Well that's all for tonight...but will there be more???

Great! Plus, I think Moench is one of the most overlooked scripters of the day!

This issue with its striking yellow background helps that ape to really pop out at you!

 

 

How appropriate that you chimed in Keith as with issue # 9 we get into some horror elements as we see the ghastly "real" faces of the mutants from Beneath...

This cover to issue # 10 is my favorite of the run! The pinks and purples on this cover are just great!

 

 

As I go through these mags again I have noticed that the format for binding changed throughout the run, from squarebound to 3 staples then 2 then random squarebounds such as this issue.

This issue sports Gray Morrow art with a "gunshot to the head" cover!

In issue # 12 we escape the POTA and on the cover get a glimpse of what the three Chimpanauts must have witnessed! Another Fav cover of mine!

 

 

In this issue also begins a two part story drawn by Tom Sutton with some fabulous art!

Issue # 13 introduces the "Assimians", features the "Wonder Wagon", and first mentions the "Psychodrome"...more on that later.

Issue # 14 gets thinner and actually goes down in price from a dollar to 75 cents!

A pretty nice cover also!

That Tom Suton art really looks like it could have inspired Burton & the designers of the POTA remake.

Issue # 15s cover always seemed odd to me since I figured the apes would not like the water. But what other cover can boast an ape and a giant squid fight in front of a scantily clad woman?
