If this book graded 9.8, how much would the following defect bring down the grade? Any comments appreciated.

I can't answer that from a CGC perspective. 
But I personally wouldn't grade it any higher than a 4.5 due to the spine split, and we haven't been shown the full book.

As a collector, I'd be pretty irked if I bought a modern age comic graded at 8.5 and it had a spine split of any kind.
An 8.5 should have minimal wear and tear (I consider a spine split to be pretty significant damage).
Granted if it is slabbed the collector may not even notice it.  But is there a history of CGC grading books above a 5.5 with a spine split?
