***Clarifications to eBay's Shill Bidding Policy***

July 18, 2005 | 05:14PM PST/PT

Hi … I'm Steve Oglethorpe, Senior Marketplace Policy Manager.

Shill Bidding is bidding that artificially increases an item's price or

apparent desirability. It includes bidding by individuals with a level

of access to information about the seller's item not available to the

general Community. Shill Bidding unfairly manipulates item prices and

undermines trust in the marketplace, and is prohibited on eBay.

Today, we are announcing some clarifications to the Shill Bidding policy to reduce confusion about what constitutes Shill Bidding, specifically as it pertains to bidding by a seller's family members, roommates, or employees on that seller's items.

Because a seller's family members, roommates, and employees have a

level of access to information about the seller's items which is not

available to the general Community, they are not permitted to bid on items

offered by the seller—-even if their sole intent is to purchase the item.

Family members, roommates, and employees may purchase items from a

seller without violating this policy simply by using fixed price purchase

options that do not involve bidding. These fixed price purchase options

include Buy It Now

[http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/buyer-bin.html?ssPageName=CMDV:AB] or

purchasing from the seller's eBay Stores.

We strongly encourage sellers to ensure that their family members,

employees, and roommates are aware of this policy and of the possible

consequences of violation.

Members who violate the Shill Bidding policy face a range of actions

including listing cancellation, loss of eBay fees on cancelled listings,

loss of PowerSeller status, and account suspension.

For more information and examples, please review our Shill Bidding

policy

and other marketplace policies.

I'm guessing blanket warnings to all those transactions between persons with the same last name? Or same registered address? but as usual hey will probably count on the ebay community to police themselves and rat out anyone who violates this.

How are they going to police that? confused-smiley-013.gif

They can't.

Exactly. This is just another one of EBay's bogus PR's where it's stated they will police infractions more effectively, but they'll just go back to doing nothing.

I foresee even greater numbers of private listing in the future.

Yeah, Ebay/Paypal really cares if there's shill bidding. 27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif

Exactly, after all the more the auction goes for the more they make in fee's. So they must be putting on a show for the Whiners. Thank God I thought they were going to put me and all my shill’s out of business. insane.gif

I expect this will probably be where this will all end up. But not before several known fraternal comic delaers are outed and witch-hunted off ebay...

What is a fraternal comic dealer? confused-smiley-013.gif Examples?

Actually this is the next area I see eBay modifying and/or eliminating...

sarcasm aside...i'd love to see the private auction feature done away with...

i'm not too embarassed to buy my porn openly online and it would be a great help in getting rid of so much shilling and generally questionable selling.

Fraternal might have been a poor choice of word. Maybe I could have focused more on the employee-employer relationships. If Heritage allows employees to bid in their Heritage signature auctions, some of which are carried out real time on ebay as well, there will have to be a stop to that (acc to this new ebay rule). How many forumites have known family that post on here and are into comics? No more bidding on each other's auctions, regardless of whether the intent is legit or not. Otherwise, you'd have several slighted forumite underbidders more than ready to rat you out to the ebay fuzz.
