Zack Snyder (Watchmen, Man of Steel) and Jay Oliva (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox) are teaming with Netflix to create a new original anime series for the internet network. The project, set in the world of Norse mythology, comes amid Netflix efforts to bolster its programming in the anime area.

Snyder and Oliva will write the series. Oliva also will serve as showrunner, director and executive producer and Snyder will executive produce. Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller will produce the series alongside Snyder through Stone Quarry Animation, their production company’s newest venture with Oliva.

Oliva and Snyder have had a longstanding creative partnership, spanning over a dozen live action feature films including Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, 300: Rise of an Empire, and Man of Steel.

“Zack Snyder’s innovation in visual storytelling has pushed the industry forward and established him as one of the most distinctive filmmakers of his generation. We are beyond excited to partner with him and his exceptional team to bring the iconic characters and stories of Norse mythology to life in his inimitable style,” said John Derderian, head of Anime programming for Netflix.

Snyder is currently directing, writing, and producing the zombie thriller feature film Army of the Dead for Netflix. Oliva is currently in production on the Manila-set Netflix original anime series Trese.

Jay Oliva has confirmed that his upcoming Netflix anime series based on Norse mythology, which he is co-helming with long-time partner Zach Snyder, is already in production. The series will be the second to come out of Oliva’s animation studio Lex and Otis following the impending release of Trese, another Netflix original anime based on the comics by Filipino writer Budjette Tan and artist Kajo Baldisimo.

Last July, Netflix announced the Norse series as part of its ongoing campaign to produce more original anime, with Snyder to serve as executive producer and Oliva as director and showrunner. Oliva has worked with Snyder on various projects as a storyboard artist, including Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He also directed major animated films like DC’s two-part The Dark Knight Returns, based on the comic by Frank Miller.

In a spotlight panel for Justice Con, Oliva confirmed progress on the Norse myth show, saying that the series is “in production right now,” and that “Netflix is super jazzed.” He also discusses Trese, holding back on a concrete release date but stating that it would be coming “soon,” and that there will be an announcement with more details shortly. The Trese comics follow a detective named Alexandra Trese, who solves supernatural crimes in a fictionalized Manila, and Oliva is serving as showrunner for the series adaptation as well. “It’s cool because it’s about Filipino mythology and folklore,” he said. He and Snyder have teamed up frequently in the past, though Oliva notes in the panel discussion that the Norse show will be Snyder’s first time working in TV animation.

Digital Dimension Entertainment Group (DDEG) and Lex+Otis have formed a joint venture studio, KRAKN Animation.

The facility, with locations in Montreal and Los Angeles, will be co-owned by Louis-Simon Menard, CEO and president of DDEG, and Jay Oliva, founder and CEO of Lex+Otis. KRAKN Animation will offer preproduction and animation services for high-end 3D series and features.

“Our mutual passion for immersive and engaging storytelling, and desire for doing things differently is what unites us,” Menard said in a statement about the decision to jointly launch an integrated animation studio. Digital Dimension’s Meduzarts Animation studio has been collaborating with Oliva and The Stone Quarry Animation on Netflix’s Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas.

The series, to star Joe Manganiello, Dave Bautista, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Christian Slater and Ella Purnell, is a prequel to Zack Snyder’s original zombie heist action film Army of the Dead, a franchise kickoff for Netflix.

Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas is executive produced by Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Wesley Coller, Jay Oliva and Shay Hatten. Digital Dimension and Lex+Otis are also collaborating on Snyder’s recently announced animated TV series for Netflix, Twilight of the Gods.
